  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
I bought 4 boat hooks, Eversprout brand, look good, got them from Amazon.
Should have researched more apparently. 1st on bent on first use. Granted I was pulling a rope up with and and applied a bit of pressure. I don't think the tubes are anodized, seems like very soft aluminum.

Just wondering if anyone has a suggestion for a better brand?

Found a pretty good review, don't know how old it is but they tested 5 brands fairly thoroughly.

Boats hooks aren’t made to withstand any pressure, just to lift lines of a hook

We never use any, except to pick up something in the water. It s much easier to swing the bow or stern close to a piling to pick up the line anyway.

Yeah, I found out the hard way LOL. These one seem very weak relative to the older ones I have.

Any of you have the solid teak boat hook. I thought they were standard equipment on our boats but now not so sure. The one that came with my boat was so heavy my wife could barely lift it, but I bet it would never bend. We now have an aluminum one from West Marine that seems pretty good.

We have the extender large ones from WM, one on each side. As Pascal said we only use it to retrieve items in the water.

I have two different ones, not sure of the brands...

Both have the little balls that you press in to slide it to the next indent, they don't have the twist thing to set it to any length you want.

But, they always stay the length you want.

One of them looks like the Shurhold ones, but it is probably somewhat old and seems like it is actually stainless, not polished aluminum, but I am not sure.

The other is definitely aluminum, same type of adjustability but it is triangular and not round.

So, it doesn't roll around and it is much lighter.

I have a big long wood one that came with the boat and has hooks for it to sit on mounted on the side walkway on the boat. You could kill a guy with that thing, it's not going to bend picking a line up. The new ones are too flimsy to be of much use unless it's retrieving a cushion or something.

Thats a decent magazine. The previous incarnation that dealt more with powerboats was better but its gone now. I have the west marine version boat hook but the handle grip was lose and the red tip caps got lost really fast. My solution, which I hope you like, was to use red WhipIt and repeatedly dip the handle end to create a new impossible to remove handle and also, I dipped the pointy ends repeatedly to create new nonremovable red tips. It took seven or eight dips to build up enough but you got to do something boat related during the winter.

Some guys in our marine say this expensive carbon fiber one is the best. I think they just like throwing away their money but you can decide for yourself.

$95 to $300+ for a real long one. I bet they are nice.
Won't break or bend either I'm guessing.

Take my Money LOL

I like how they are "YOT" sticks, James Bond would be proud!

You’re looking for a project to manufacture come up with a better boat hook

I have one of the wooden boat hooks but the metal hook on the end has fallen off. Does anyone know the replacement part for that?

Thanks

Yes, the aluminum ones are cheap, the carbon fiber ones look pretty good, but pricey, their doesn't seem to be much in between.

I agree, I bent a brand new aluminum one without much effort.

There is a product called a docking stick that is a nice addition to a boat hook.
Good for looping a rope around a pole that is out of reach without having to do the "throw the rope" thing 10 times.
