What is the risk of a piece of impellor in the transmission?

While changing oil yesterday the reversible pump didn't seem right, so I pulled the cover off the impeller and found two vanes missing. I don't know if these went into the waste can or the transmission. If the latter, can they get sucked up and cause damage, or is there a screen in front of the pump?

If its an Allison there is a screen on the intake. Its in that cannish-looking-thing that is sticking up at an angle out of the bottom of the transmission.

That screen, by the way, should be pulled and cleaned every couple of years. You will need a new gasket.

There is a screen on the Allisons at the pick up. You should check that when you change oil. Just pull the bolts on the flange and it will slide out. It will require a gasket to put it back but you can just make a paper gasket for it. No need to buy one.

Thanks guys. Sounds like the canish-looking thing is at the bottom of the transmission and I have already refilled it so will wait to check it until the next change in July rather than lose the oil.

I just bought a new impeller at Marathon Boatyard and Diesel.... $29!! Worst Marine was $22, but not in stock. And just a few weeks back I got the big DD impellers for $34 on line shipping included. Guess I'll order some spares.

Naw, you can open it without spilling anything - the top of the pickup strainer "holder" is dry when the engine is off.

Follow the big pick-up line from your pump on the engine down to the trans. You'll see the three-bolt fitting there that has to come off to get to the screen.

On the Allison the oil drain hole is only 1/4 NPT and usually has a street ell on it. I doubt the blade can make it around the bend. The engine oil pan is another story. I have dropped pans and seen a dozen blades in the bottom!

And they usually won't hurt anything unless they all end up in the oil pump intake screen.......
