  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
58' YACHT FISHERMAN (1970 - 1981)
I changed the primary and secondary fuel filters on the genny today. It went well. I poured out the fuel from the old filters and noticed that the fuel was the color of red wine. what does it mean?

Was it a Rose or Merlot?

Real men burn red. really smart people buy off road dyed red diesel and do not pay road tax on the fuel.

Red is good. Black is bad.

off road, untaxed is red.... diesel at a road pump is clear.

ok, thanks guys!

I didn't know that! I thought all diesel was red. I've learned something new today. :)

Road diesel is greenish/clear.

When you see portable scales with gendarmes checking stuff, one of the first things they look at is the fuel color. Red stuff in Illinois is a 10K fine. The cheapo operators use red fuel in the refer units tho, thats not considered road equipment, just like bulldozers and farm tractors.
I prefer Sangria! ws

Actually, trucks file a road use tax in every state traveled that includes fuel purchased and miles driven. If fuel is purchased out of state all the time, the trucker must write a check to the state for the road use tax. Fuel purchased (and taxed) for a refer can have the tax refunded to the trucker. It is a pain in the butt to file all the tax forms. Some independants will actually buy fuel in every state to avoid having to write a check to them. Some run strictly "outlaw", no fuel stickers, overweight, and around the scales all the time.

Right now, in our area (CT), the taxed road diesel is a little cheaper than the untaxed diesel on the docks. As usual, we have to stock up on the KY to get over this!!
