Well it looks like Maynard has done a little bodywork. He is absolutely right about the only way to get a straight surface is a long flat board, whether you do t with power or by hand is your choice, but damn, these boats are BIG.
I have restored old classic cars for 45 years and couldnt get a straight surface with a random orbital , wont even talk about what I think about trying to get a straight surface with a grinder, you seriously need to get the right tools, you dont have to spend a fortune as Maynard explains. Harbor freight stuff works well ..... and sometimes you gotta go back and get another tools cause the first one blew up.
Get a compressor , make sure it is sufficient cfm, and don't spare the sandpaper.

Ok, I'm gonna do this the right way. Getting the tool online. Any recommendations on a compressor? I would like to not spend a fortune and get a portable unit, but the CFM seems to be just around 5 for these sanders. Have yet to find a truley "portable" compressor that fits that. Any ideas?

Correction, seems to be more like 8 or 9 CFM for these sanders. That is a big compressor! Maynard, where is this portable 9 CFM compressor you speak of?

Harbor freight has the 3 hp 4.9 cfm at 90psi compressor that will just do the job for $199.00, it portable in that it has wheels. You've got to have at least that to power the straight line sander.

i picked up a 33 gal 5 HP way back when and I need to run between 2 of them to keep working with a DA. get the largest and highest CFM you can carry.

You're not doing anything else, this summer, are you? You'll be busy. You'll also have a great looking boat when you're done...

Get a bigger compressor, statiionary, do the work with cfm to spare, maybe get somebody to help with another sander, and sell it on e-bay when you're done.
