  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
61' COCKPIT MY (1981 - 1985)
Most of the grey felt trim on my sliding windows (Salon and Aft Deck) has deteriorated and needs to be replaced. I have ordered the felt from Sam's for replacement. Anybody been through this process with any words of wisdom?

Additionally, the windows slide on some sort of plastic channel (see attached photo) most of which is broken/deteriorated and or missing. I pulled out a short portion of it for the photo and you can see it's profile. Seems to just lay in the bottom of the window track. Is this stuff HATT specific or is it available from a garden variety window shop?

As always, any insite or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Sam's has the plastic also. On my windows, there was no way to remove the fuzzy stuff so I had to dremil a vertical slot on the inside to get it out and re-install the new stuff. Depending on the amount of dirt etc., the old stuff may be difficult to remove but it will come with perseverence.

The plastic channel is available from Sam's as well. Replace it while you're in there.

There are a few threads on here about the process, the biggest issue in my opinion is getting the glass out of the frame and back in. We used a carefully measured 2x4 to gently stretch the frame apart enough to get the glass out. Two person job, one there with a glass suction handle to keep the glass from falling out and breaking, or into the drink in some cases...

There are other techniques, read the threads and decide which one is best for you.

Thanks! Just got off the phone with Sam' and ordered some.

I will, I plan to take the windows to a glass tint shop and have them re-done as well at the same time. This forum is great!

Question.......In as much as I don't use window screens on my sliding windows, do anybody see a problem with just removing the "monkey hair" felt and plastic track from the third track? Seems like it would simplify things and drain better to boot, yes?

I have done mine twice. Use a bottle jack and 2 small blocks to take the slight sag out of the frame. remove the glass and screen in order. Find the cutout in the fuzzy tracks and pull the old ones with a sharp pick and needle nose pliers. Get something under the plastic track and pry out. Cut the new tracks to length and lay them I the groove. Now make a piece of wood or plywood to use as a driver. Hammer the track in the length of the groove. DON'T try to slide it in. You can't. Now slide the new fuzzys in their tracks and reverse the process to install the glass.

I would make sure if you have the drain holes like we have you cut it before then. We had a replacement and the holes were plugged and covered the drain so water could not get through. I had a leak this fixed it.

I don't have the screens either, so when I did this last summer I removed the fuzzies from that track.

Since the screens are on the most inside track, I don't think it makes much difference.

I was thinking (can be dangerous!) that since I will have the windows out to replace the tracks and felt, that I would put them back in using the two iner-most tracks, creating an "unobstructed" drain channel with the outside track.

Also, had to order a new vertical aluminum extrusion, to replaced one missing, from Sam's, anybody know who can do bronze anodizing? The ones Sam's sells come mill finished.

Not sure about the anodizing (maybe Steve knows a place, you could ask, or try a commercial glass shop). I had a bronze metallic paint that touched things up pretty well. Are you thinking of eliminating the screens? Not sure where you will be cruising, but it was nice to be able to open the windows on a good day and not have to run the air conditioning. And of course, if the AC ever goes out, it will be in the buggiest place yet, like when the green head flies hatch in May.

Good point. My boat didn't come with any screens, maybe I should have some made instead. I suppose someone makes custom screens.

I have tried for hours to slide the new felt back into the tracks, and thried putting in the bottom first then trying to push in the top. I have had little success. Getting the windows out is the easy part!

Any help, especiallyt photos or diagrams would be greatly appreciated.

Try a little soapy water, it may help it slide. I put one side of the felt in then used 2 little screw drivers to help the other side in Inch by inch if I recall.

Its not easy. I replaced the fuzzies in all of my sliders (4 of them) probably 10 or 12 years ago and its time to do it again. I used some of the angled picks and small screw drivers.

Use the round end of a paint can opener. Put the bottom in then run it along the top, it will go in just like a zipper. It worked for me, pulling the old stuff out was the worst part. It came out by the inch.

Very hard to find bronze anodizing . And if you do , the welds won’t look right. I hard anodized the aluminum and then painted it bronze.
