  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1978 - 1983)
My starboatd Sherwood sea water pump started leaking oil at the body. It looks rough after removing and breaking down. Anyone have any thoughts about replacing vs. rebuilding? The leak started about 10 hours after installing a new impeller. As for buying new, who has the best price? They ain't giving these things away! How about thoughts about servicing port since they have the same hours? Both have 1800 hours.

Gear driven ?? gen set application ?? I thought Jabsco may have made an equal a few years ago ...

Gear driven. It is on my main, a Cat 3196, 660 HP.

Try Tony Athens at Seaboard Marine. They have replacements for some Sherwood pumps that are quite a bit better than original. If not them, then Depco is the place to find it. They have EVERYTHING.

Update: As I get further along, I now have the shaft and bearings pulled. The larger ball bearing set is shattered (inside race). I believe Sherwood recommends buying a new shaft with bearings in this situation. Now, I am likely up to the cost of a whole new pump. Oh well, nice just to pull out of the box and bolt it on.

Sounds like you need a new pump. Parts and labor will be more than buying a new one. Try these guys. They had the best price when my generator raw water pump needed replacing and I received it next day.

I think you will rebuild after you see the cost for a new pump. Check with Cat, often they have exchage pumps cheaper than rebuilding one.

I'll have 2 Sherwood pumps from Cummins 330Bs available the end of this week if they are the right size. Replacing them with Tony Athens Seamax pumps on Thurs. Let me know if I can help.

What is condition and model number of pumps being replaced?

Condition is good, were rebuilt last year and I'm guessing have around 150 to 200 hours on them. Stb was leaking from the wearplate not from the weephole where i've heard the problems are. Hours are vague as I just bought the boat 6 weeks ago and brought it up from Daytona in 50 hrs running time. Don't know the model # but are std issue for the 330Bs. I've just heard that Tony Athens pumps are so much better that I decieded to bite the bullit and spend the 1500 to replace them. In addition on the Sherwoods you have to jack the engine and remove an engine mount to get them on or off. The new ones just bolt on no problem so if in the future i need to rebuild I can do it myself.
