“Restore” engine oil treatment

I’m sure to be flamed for this, but I wanted to share my experience with Restore oil treatment in my generators and main engines. When I purchased my boat I was having to add oil to my Northern Lights 12kw genset after every time I used it. In fact, it even shutdown once after 6 hours or so due to low oil. I was having to put at least a gallon of oil in between 100hr oil changes! The 20kw Onan while not as bad also needed oil several times between 100hr changes as well. On a whim I added Restore to them both at my previous oil change just to see if it made any difference. Well, after 100hrs the NL needed zero oil added between changes and the same with the Onan: no oil was consumed between changes in 100hrs.
On the basis of those results I added Restore to my 12/71’s at the last oil change, again, just to see if it made any difference. After 70hrs, I just had to service both with oil for the first time: the port was down 1/8” from the full mark and the stb was down just a bit more. I use a hand pump in a 5 gallon pail to service the engines so I don’t really know how many quarts they took, but I was previously having to add oil every 5 to 10 hours, or every day when traveling.
I used two large cans (meant for a V8) to the DD’s and 1/2 a V8 can in each generator. I use NAPA low ash 49wt in the mains and Napa 15/40 in the generators. It costs a bit more each oil change for the additive, but the convenience of not having to add oil between changes is worth it for me. Especially when we run the air conditioning overnight on those still humid summer nights.

Re: “Restore” engine oil treatment

I forgot to add that my mains have 5000+ hrs and the Onan has 2900+hrs, the NL has 3600+hrs.

Re: “Restore” engine oil treatment

My gen is a 4-cycle and seems to never need oil, but that is impressive (and hard to believe) that you are running a 2 stroke DD and it doesn't lose oil.

No flaming and no one is going to argue your personal experience. It is, however, anecdotal in the scientific sense of the word and no substitute for proper testing. Nor is whatever they claim on their web site. INDEPENDENT scientific lab testing is the only acceptable evidence. Show us that and I'll sign up.

I have no idea of any other claims or benefits, I just know that my oil consumption dropped. Dramatically in the case of my 3-cyl Kubota block diesel. I was not expecting much change from the Detroits since the ratio of Restore to oil was so weak compared to the generators. 1qt to 7.5 gallons vs 1/2 pint to 5 liters.

Anyway this additive worked for me and I’ll be making it a part of my oil change routine now.

Thanks for "coming out" in spite of the chance for ridicule. It's real world experience and a valid data point.

Re: “Restore” engine oil treatment

Please do us all a favor and give us an update after 100 hours or each time you change oil. This could be a game changer for a number of old DD’s. Did you notice if your motors had less smoke while running? Thanks for trying this out.

I'll be following this for updates. Please let us know.

Re: “Restore” engine oil treatment

Chemical repair technology has been improving over the past 10 years.

My starboard 12v71 had plenty of oil leaks until I added six small cans of Liquid Moly seal and gasket restorer. Over the next three months EVERY oil leak stopped. The motor and bilge are still dry after 2 years. Best US$60 I've spent.

After 35 years of use from different owners, we used a special sump and sludge cleaner on both engines and the genset. Amazing results easily seen. The issue for bigger 71s and 92s that mostly run at hull speed is oil degradation/sludge/carbon buildup.

I guess my point is that reputable chemical additive companies are making a wide range of products that work to solve issues and they should not be dismissed as hocus pocus.

Re: “Restore” engine oil treatment

Where did you buy the liqui moly and do you recommend 6 small cans for each 12v71v?

Re: “Restore” engine oil treatment

We were able to purchase this product at an auto store in Sydney Australia. They have an international website and I'm sure that You could purchase it in the United States. A 12v71 takes about 30 litres and each small can treats about 5 litres.

Re: “Restore” engine oil treatment

My engines used to smoke a tiny bit on cold starts until I began to use Technol 403 fuel treatment. Since then, no smoke and I never had soot on the transom. All 24 cylinders were within factory specs for compression at the time of the pre-purchase engine survey.

Re: “Restore” engine oil treatment

An Amazon search for Liqui Moly brings up many products, which one are you talking about?

Re: “Restore” engine oil treatment

Im looking for the the seal and gasket restorer. I don't see it on Amazon
