Hi, when I change my filters it appears that the fuel level in the filter housing is only half way up the filter, the upper half of the filter seems clean the bottom half dirty, any thoughts in this? Best place to buy racor parts. Thanks, Steve
 
Sounds like you have an air leak. check the T handle fitting on the top of the filter. Sometimes the gasket under it doesn't seat right allowing air in and fuel to leak back into the tank. Make sure you wet that gasket with a little fuel before you retighten as well.
 
Are you topping the new Racor filter off with clean diesel before replacing the lid? Just pour it on top until full.
 
Are you saying it's half full after you take the element out? If so that's normal. If the fuel is draining down and you're low with the element in place then you have an air leak or a bad/dirty check valve on the Racor. Did you shut the fuel off before opening the Racor?
 
Hi, I did not turn off the fuel before removing the Filter and yes I have been topping them off when I change the filters but apparently when they're running the filter canister seems to be half-full and only half of the filter is getting dirty.
I had been running 10 microns but went to 30 at the suggestion of some friends and I'm wondering if that could cause any difference. I really don't know if I have an air leak and I'm wondering if the vacuum gauges would give me an indication of this the one that is getting dirty all the time seems to be high as soon as I put the filter in.

Assuming the gage is working properly, a high vacuum reading immediately indicates a blockage somewhere.

Id just run them like they are. When the filter gets dirty, Flip it and then your fine for another trip or two.

At the risk of reigniting a conflict...I use 30 microns because that is what DD recommends even in marine applications. The secondary (DD 23530643) filter is a 16 micron filter. That set-up works for me. I carry a couple of spare secondaries and plenty of primaries.

You're coming up on a loss of power if your filter assembly is not always completely full of fuel. Probably won't happen when it's the most convenient.

I would suggest not pouring fuel from a can, or any source, to fill the filter without straining it. Any auto parts store that sells paint will have filter funnels. They'll probably give you a couple t no charge. You could be bit surprised to see what's left in the screen--hopefully not.

So as not to worry about pouring in fuel that may be dirty, fill with Power Service Diesel Kleen. Or, as we used to do it in the 80's, fill with ATF.

The filter itself is not causing the problem. Use a 10 micron or a 30 micron or a 2 micron; whatever you are comfortable with. As stated, you need to shut off the fuel line so your fuel doesn't drain back to the tank, then reopen only after you fill it up and get the cover locked back down.

I will also restate that 2 micron filters are your friend. If (when) you get bad fuel somewhere and are caught out in a sea, you will be thankful to only have to switch Racors and not have to change a secondary filter to get you home.
 
I bought a brand new 1 gal fuel tank. Filled it with known clean diesel and used it to top off the filters. Diesel clean is ok but not a great additive.

I disagree. Its the best value out there. We've been using it for years in our off road equipment and the cetane boost is very effective as is the additional lubricity.

Maybe, but I've run 1000's of gallons of DK(buy it in 55gal drums) in off road equipment for years and we never have injection issues. When I find something that works, I stay with it.
 
I have a customer come in next week from a cruise that's picking up 5 5 gal containers to treat their fuel. Each 5 gal container treats 10,000 gallons. $250 each. It's the most cost effective additive I've found.

I just want to make sure I got this right.

You are filling the filter bowl up with full strength Diesel Kleen and letting that run into the engine?

Yes you can do that.

Detroits circulate lots of fuel. It dilutes pretty fast
