  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
58' TRIPLE CABIN (1970 - 1976)
Just like clock work my 8 volt engine starting batteries died. I have had the boat for 12 years and every 4 years they die. The problem is every place that used to sell them now says they are not available. These are the places that used to, but not anymore; Ziegler, Interstate Battery, Napa, Car Quest, Battries Plus.

If you have recently purchased them, please forward the contact info. Any help would be great.

Thanks,

My house bank died this week, so I need 4 8v/195 batteries too.

Just went through this drill my self this week.
Seems like everything you said is true right now.
They had the batteries built to order in there Georgia plant.
These folks were great:

looks like there is a dealer in MN.
Others around your state as well.

The Rolls 8hhg 21p is a group 981 battery with similar size and performance to the 8v/195 but is a bit heavier: 121lbs vs 90lbs. Pascoe Battery in MD has them in stock. They also have the Deka 819 of similar size and weight, but with Only 1/2 the MCA. The Rolls looks like the way to go since is is similar in size, but has greater MCA than the 8v/195. The 819 is $459 and the Rolls 8HHG 21P is $399, I called and they claim next day shipping on both.

Pascoe has 30 of the Rolls in stock in MD. Next day shipping with 3 to 4 days to Jacksonville. DC battery in Miami wanted $525 each with a 6 week lead time! Now I have to see if my Sentry charger will handle having the 8v/195 on the stb side and the 8hhg 21’s on the port..... I’d prefer to not have to replace 2018 stb side batteries if I can help it.

The Rolls is a deep cycle battery better suited to use as a 32v house bank. Using it as a starting battery will impact its longevity so it won’t last the 8 to 10 years one would expect, but since its cheaper than the 8v/195 by $60 a battery, if it lasts only 4 to 5 years, I’m still coming out ahead. My engines start as soon as I touch the button and I am considering using the parallel switch as well to help out the port side when starting. When the stb batteries die eventually I may replace them with 819 start batteries which I have been told is what was specified by Hatteras originally. The fiberglass battery boxes are sized to fit the 24” long 819s and the 8v/195s are much shorter.

Any comments or suggestions?

I got 10 years out of Rolls on the House/Inverter bank. I have 11 on them in my start bank. My dockmate got 13 years out of his last set of Rolls.

Did you use deep-cycle batteries on your start bank? What model number did you use?

For some reason the Rolls and US batteries have a spade connection versus the traditional round posts. I would have to change my connections on the main cables, has anyone seen a field bolt on to cable bracket that can manually crimp to the cable and then bolt to the battery?

I just got four deka 8V from royal battery in north jersey.

Call any local golf course and they should be able to steer youin the right direction. All carts use 8 volt batteries.

Lots of Carts still use 6v batts. Positive thoughts but not quite correct.

Yeah and I went to West Marine looking for a new putter.

It was suggested to me that I consider re-wiring so that both engines start normally on the starboard batteries and use the port bank for house loads. I would keep the ability to parallel both banks when starting if needed. That would allow true deep cycle house batteries and true start batteries for short strong loads. Good idea?

I thought the 24” 819 was the OEM battery? I have a set of original fiberglass boxes in my starboard engine room and they look to be sized for a 24” battery. The current 8v/195s look small in there. I have a pair of Todd boxes on the port side where the Rolls will go and they will fit with about 1/8” to spare(I hope).

Why rewire? Moving 4/0 wire to the other side of the boat is going to be a chore, a cost, and it will probably gain you nothing. The boat is set up with battery switches in logical places in each engine room. Don't mess with the Hatteras wiring. It was really good in that era. I would leave it as is.

Greetings. We should all join an 8V support group!

Last year, one of my starboard batteries melted a terminal so I scrambled and found the last 8 DEKAs from Nationwide Battery. Unfortunately, the trucker (or someone in the warehouse) punctured 2 of the 8 and i had to go looking again. I found 2 batteries from 2 different sources (US Battery and an Ebay special) and paid dearly for both. This season, the Sentry charger is short cycling after the batteries are fully charged and there is a .5v disparity between the port and starboard banks. Sentry Charger (very helpful) sent me a new control board with factory set cut in and cut out pots. I replaced the board and now it's better but not normal. ME Yacht Restoration in Holland Michigan is sending a tech to troubleshoot the 32V systems next week, so hopefully the gremlin will be identified.

As for batteries, Rolls is probably my next option in 4 years, so if anyone has first hand experience with them, please let us know.

Cheers

If the charger is short cycling, I think you have a bad battery. Check each cell with a multi meter . This usually will show a problem cell. A hydrometer will give the best indication.

If you want to have a 32v system where batteries last, buy a smart charger. The old Lamarch and Sentry chargers will not cut it. You have to do a multi-step charge and have the ability to do an equalization charge.

Analytic Systems makes a nice 32v smart charger.

Next, buy the best lead acid 8v batteries you can get. IMO, that is the Rolls. My experience is 9-11 years on a set of Rolls. My friend got 13 years out of his. Quit screwing around with those old chargers and your batteries will live a long life.
