According to the dealer I talked to yesterday. Anything larger than a 40 inch is a LCD projection type and not a true flat screen LCD. They all look the same to me from the front. I only know what the dealer said yesterday when I went looking for a new big screen. Now I'm going to have to dig deeper. Inquiring minds want to know. I would love to rip that dealers butt if that's the case. I could be wrong, but that is what I was told. I don't like to be zoomed by a sales person that is supposed to know.

Bill,

LCD can be front projection, rear projection or just LCD itself....if it's flat screen and not 18" deep...it's just LCD and not rear/front projection.

Problem with big LCD flat screens is over 52" they get pricey compared to plasma (eg LCD 52"=5k, 57"=8k....whereas 58" plasma=6k)

Give the guy a break since he is only allowed to know what the retailer wants him to know. I sell the pro gear. LCD panels are selling above 60" and not projection units. We use them in everything from control rooms to home theatre and public display.

From these replys it is quite obvious that LCD is the way to go. We have a 20" with built in DVD in our stateroom and it is awesome. Planning on a 37 -42" in the salon. Thinking about a Sole on a lift. My buddy sells these to all the builders in Wanchese...Good enough for me...

Docrockit, what typle of lift are you looking at? I have looked into them in my plans to upgrade the TV but had no luck finding anything that cost less than the TV itself! Maybe your buddy could hook a few of us up with a deal? Let us know.

I read an article about these flat screen tv's yesterday. Bottom line is the price is expected to drop another 20-30 % next year.

I installed a 42" ( if I remember right, fujitsu ) on a 72' hatt a few years back. In the same spot as the pic in a previous reply. That person paid 17k .

The plasma tv's , at that time had a life expectancy of about 3 years, but the one I installed in a custom teak base, shadow box back and aluminum bracing is still working great.

I expect there will be strong advances in the LCD technology in the next year or so. Sharp now has the technology to transmit 3 different shows on the same screen at the same time.

The angle at which you view, right-center-left determines which "show" you will view. The article was On MSN yesterday or the day before.

Personnaly I think the Plasma has better pic quality and some can be viewed from a 67 degree angle and still see the entire pic. The problem is in our minds eye....we want to view the tv head on.

Thanks Starman for the reply I got my 50 inch at Costco like 6 mo. ago I can't remember the price I think was like $ 1999.00 ..sometimes when we cross a lot of water it sure is nice to pop in some movies

Finally got my TV hooked to the chartplotter and here is the scoop it's very easy...first you need the PC upload box comes with a remote control so you can be watching a movie and switch back and forth to the chartplotter radar front camera etc this will make driving deep blue waters much easier

Next hook up your camera to chartplotter then to TV then your set to look all around you boat with remote control and not have to get off the sofa leave it to a big guy to figure the weird stuff out

That's pretty neat Carl. You can really see that good. But wouldn't new eye glasses been cheaper? Carl, I'm going to be in Naples for Christmas. Maybe we can catch a beer or something. I would love to see your boat and how you have your electronics hooked up.

Go with LCD, skip the Westinghouse. I have a 42" LCD in the salon. I went though 4 Westinghouses in a 30 day period. Besides the Westinghouse is thick. My TV sits in a cabinet and raises up when its TV time - so I needed a thinner model that would fit in the cabinet. Stick with the top names (Sony, Toshiba, etc). Yes, their a few dollars more. But you get what you pay for...
