Hurricane damage repairs underway

Started repairs on the damaged port side on my 53... got a good and reasonable fiberglass guy who's building a new cap rail in the shop. Boat is going in the yard tomorrow for the repower and he ll finish the work there

Also going to remove what's left of the weather boards and stanchions (only the starboard side and half the stern panels are left) and we re going to redo them with glassed in fiberglass panels suported by fiberglass columns. Will look much better and stronger.

Trying to decide on paint. I was going to wait a couple more years to repaint the hull but that's no longer an option. Strongly leaning towards a pale yellow hull which I think is classic enough to look good on a 53. White topsides.

In addition to pulling out the 8V71Ns, installing the factory remains C-series with new ZF gears, new one piece shafts and wheels, I m also replacing all the thru hulls and sea cocks with South Bay strainers.

The vosper minifins are coming out and being replaced by Tracs. I got really lucky there... a couple of months ago, i mentioned to a Trac tech that came to the Lazzara 84 i run that I had antique vospers on my boat. Turns out he had a set of used fins and actuators in the shop that would work on the hatt... price was too good to pass even with new elecronics, touch screen and pump!

Next two months are going to be interesting !!

Pascal I would be really interested in seeing how you fabricate new side panels to replace the Doger boards I been thinking about doing the same when I do a repainted next year. For me I wanted to also address the way the teak rails and the upper side Windows meet the wing doors. The current set up seems like a maintence hassle

Here is something a neighbor of mine has done, not a hatt but the idea is the same although I would donsolif columns instead of the split. It can all be done with divinycel foam core and glassed in. A nice improvement over those dodger boards and caulking.

It def is a nice improvement. Are you thinking of terminating the hand rail where the dodger board starts or mount the rail to the top if the new fiberglass panels

You seem so calm with this huge project ahead of you. You are a better man than I. She will come out looking almost new I would imagine. Best of luck and keep the photos of the progress coming.

The hand rail is going to be epoxied on top of the panels and support columns. The old rails have been sanded too many times and are thin. Going to redo them in mahogany

Calm? Yeah... don't have much choice... I m using the right people who i have either used in the past on other projects or whom i know because they have worked on neighbors boats. The key is to find the right now people who you know will do a good job as not overcharge. For instance the port side repair incl building about 15/20 feet of caprail is $5000... would have been three times more at the standard yard rate.

Is it cheaper to buy pre-made composite panels or have them fabricated by your fiberglass guy? Guess one of the issues might be a lot of waste with pre-made???
Also, a lot of sport fish boats are doing faux teak painted toe rails, transoms, cockpit bulkheads, etc, can't really tell the difference. Those dodger boards glued to a foam glass covered handrail would be really strong, just a thought.

A neighbor of mine has completely redone his viking sportfish and some a painted transom and toe rail. It s lot more $ than real wood and I just like the feel of wood

Coosa is an option but he seems to think making them is cheaper. We ll see. I could do them myself, but he has the space in his shop so will be a lot faster.

Looking at the damage around me, I can't complain... none of the boats on the tee heads survived. My hatt is the only boat just inside a tee head to have survived. Some people who had boats in the mooring fields can't even find them or what s left of them.

My haul out is being rescheduled... turns out that when sea tow showed up the $1200 tow doubled to over $2200 by adding an hour here and an hour there... on both the primary towboat plus the second towboat they want to use for the ride upriver. It came down to $230 a mile!

I ve got two quotes now from other towers so i m waiting for the yard to reschedule...
