I would like to take some kind of short hands on training course on diesel engines in order to perform just routine repairs i.e. fuel pump, water pump replacement and things of that nature. Any major repairs such as overhauls, etc. would be left to the experts who do those type of things. If anyone out there knows of any such short term training, I certainly would appreciate your input.

For what you need to learn, read and study the engine manual and you'll be an expert. All details are there, well, in detail.

I agree with igloo, know in my case, I am NOT a mechanic-reading just doesn't cut it.
A few years ago Florida Detroit Diesel in S. Fla had classes, ranging from 3 days to do the basic stuff all the way to fully certified mechanic..
I need to 'be shown" for it to make sense to me....

When I bought my first diesel boat, I admit it was a bit intimidating. I purchased 2 books but what helped me most was hiring a diesel mechanic who did not mind a newbie looking over his shoulder.

He taught me a lot for the price of a few tune ups.

A 2 Cycle Detroit is fairly staight forward and basic maintenance is not too hard to learn.

the most important thing is having the right tool and knowing how to use is correctly. don't attempt to tackle ANYTHING on your engine without the right tool because you'll likely destroy the fastener any have to pay your mechanic double to fix your damage and do the routine job as well as piss him off.

A company called Mack Boring offers varying levels of classes including advanced Yanmar classes. mackboringDOTcom has all the info.
