Hatteras Model
41' DOUBLE CABIN (1962 - 1965)
I was at the boat toady reinstalling the hynautic steering pump (Crowell, old style). (Bill, I stopped by twice but you were not there. Do you take Sundays off??)

As I was tightening one of the tubes into the cylinder, the piece that connects the tube to the pump broke. I took it to HD and they said that they have never seen such a fitting. Duh!

It is 3/8 flare (on the tube end) and the side that goes into the pump is a 5/16 pipe thread.

I even looked at mcmaster.com and didn't see a comparable piece there. Any ideas??

Any good mechanic has the tools to flare the pipe. It's not uncommon to have to cut and reflair copper tubing.

Are you sure you don't have 1/4 or 3/8 pipe threads? My specs(SAE) don't show a 5/16" size. What you describe is called a "half union" and should be readily available.

5/16 OD tubing is 1/4" pipe ordinarily. Did you try a 1/4" fitting? 1/4" to 3/8" flare is very common...Home Depot kind or NAPA of thing. If you buy a flaring tool make sure you get one that double flares. Single flares crack with vibration eventually. No steering and a pool of red is never any fun.

You mustve got a new job as a banker LOL (bankers hours!) We pulled out at around 12:30 yesterday and drove by BARBAROS with NO Akin.... again!! Other than Sunday, my usual hours are 0730 - 1530 MONDAY thru MONDAY
BTW... you left your cord plugged in again too!! ws

Also... I probably have the fittings you need on board! ws

All the fittings on the Hynautic system are 1/4 NPT. You need to put flex between the copper and the pump and ram. What are you using for that last 2 feet? I used flex hose and connectors from the marine supplier. FYI the hose is pricey and the connectors are insane. I believe $10 each wholesale.

Sorry couldn't respond earlier - I was out of town for business.

I took the piece to HD, and they measured the pipe end to be 5/16. So I have a confirmed 3/8 flare on tube side and 5/16 pipe on the other.

There is no such thing as 5/16" pipe fittings. With pipe fittings, the nominal size is roughly the inside diameter. You no doubt are looking for 1/4" pipe size; the threads probably measure about 5/16" at the small end (they are tapered). So buy 1/4" pipe x 3/8" tubing half union and you will be in business. Your advisors are not plumbers.
Gary
ps: I've never managed to break one of these, even soft brass!

Post a pic and we can help. Are you measuring pipe thread? If so 5/16 would be 1/8 NPT. If it is tubing, there is 5/16 tubing and hose but no 5/16 threaded pipe. I am sure the parts are common, just confusion over tubing size and pipe thread size and rigid pipe.they are measured differently.
Take what you have to a hydraulic shop and they will fix you up.

Took it to a hydraulic shop.. Actually, had to go through 3 different shops - and learned that the piep end is what is called a size #5. It is not 1/4, nor 3/8 not 5/16. The 3rd shop had a replacement part, so I was able to get it replaced.

That is a hydraulic straight thread that should use an o ring to seal, not a pipe thread.
