  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
54' EXTENDED DECKHOUSE (1989 - 1992)
i'm looking for a good Broker that specializes in selling larger boats, like hatt's, in the Clearwater, Fl area. My 1990 54ED said to me the other day it was time to sell her. if you had a broker you have used and was impressed, or just liked, please pass them on to me. i'm really looking for a guy who is full time at the job, not a part timer who does not have my best interests at heart.

Try Roger Cole at West Florida Yachts. He is a like em or don't like em sort of guy but like some realtors that I used to get me out of 2 properties a couple of years ago he does know what the market will bring to the boat. Full time, many years experience, and owns the brokerage so may be worth a try.

If you decide to try Ft. Lauderdale because the market is stronger there, I would suggest Russ Schaefer at Bollman yachts. I just bought a 1988 54' Hatteras Russ had listed. I thought he did a fine job mediating the negotiations to a conclusion that was acceptable to both me and the seller. He also has access to reasonable priced slips for his sale boats. He's a younger guy, but he's very knowledgable, works extremely hard for both parties and has a long term commitment to the boat business. Russ's phone number is 954-445-2290, or through Bollman's main office 954-761-1122.

" he does know what the market will bring to the boat." .

What more could you ask for? If I was looking to buy or sell, I'd want someone who knows the market.

I agree, but i have e-mailed roger Cole twice in the past, met him at a show in St. petersburg a few years back, but i can't get the guy to call me. So if he can't pick up the phone to list a boat, i would hate to see what he does to his buyers........... He came across as a really nice guy and everything, don't get me wrong, i'm not bitch'in, I just tried to contact the guy many times unsucessfully.

Mike Howerter from Galati Yachts is a stand up guy that has been in the business for over 30years. Although he works for Galati he has a Hatteras background prior to that. He sold a Bertram of mine many years ago and is extremely knowledgable in the market. I have not spoken to him recently but his number is 727-871-1400. A true proffessional.

You may also want to try Rob Wojciechowski who works for Tom George Yacht Group in Dunedin Fl. He is also a straight up guy and can be trusted. His number is 727-423-3942.

Agree Mike is a very knowledgeable guy who has sold Hatt's for 30 years. He is also a real gentleman.

Roger Cole is a straight shooter as well. He is direct and to the point with no fluff.

I want to also recomend Russ Schaefer of Bollman Yachts in Ft. Lauderdale.
I have puchased my last two Hatteras's from him and I am completely satisfied with the outstanding job he did.

Dittos on Russ Schafer from here, also. Russ was the selling broker on on my 45c, worked out a kind of complicated trade-in deal that really did work out the best for me in the long run, and was the buying broker for my 55c. He's extremely hard-working, his follow-up is 2nd-to-none, and will think absolutely nothing of travelling to hell's half acre to follow-up a lead for you and pre-check a boat to save the buyer the trouble. He also has a real love for Hatts and isn't shy about it.

Almost equally important, his outfit (Bollman Yachts) is a very straight up outfit with some pretty solid clientele; in short, they have a lot to lose by way of lost reputation. Bollman sells a lot of really large yachts, but also do a lot of work in this older mid-sized market. They're a great fit for our kind of boat.

I have to say, I was a real problem child in selling my 45c, and Russ got WAY more than he bargained for. The entire process took over two years back before the market had really gone to seed, and it wasn't because I was a prima donna about price. My mindset totally changed midstream with what i was after vis-a-vis sale. I started out thinking I wanted a much simpler outboard express to save on maintenance and hassle, then finally got religion and pretty much decided I wasn't going to sell the boat, and after a while of living like that, decided to go the other way and trade up. He literally didn't know if I was coming or going, but throughout the process, he astounded me with his patience and class in terms of not muscling me towards something much more rewarding to him and his firm. What more could you ask?

The other thing that blew me away was the advertising support both Bollman and Russ contributed towards my sale. They routinely spend big money on full-page ads in several publications. That's just their standard practice and it costs them $$$.

I vote Scott or Boatsb, a member of this forum and has sold a number of Hats in the last 12 months and sold mine in 2weeks. He will absolutely go out of his way for you and any prospects, just ask the guy in Australia that bought a 60 trawler in last couple of months in FL and Scott had it shipped to Australia.

Glad to hear some favorable comments about yacht brokers, who are an indispensable group for all of us, whether we like it or not. And personally I like it; I owe the fact that I own and love a Hatteras, and all the things that have come with it, to a yacht broker.

Now if I can just do as well on a sailboat for my goddaughter, I'll be very happy indeed.

What you looking for Jim?

Just like in every other profession, there are good and bad. A good knowledgeable broker is a valuable asset. Unfortunately the bad ones give the rest a bad rap. Just like car salesmen, lawyers, realtors etc. I've found some very good ones and some awful ones.

thanks everyone, i believe i have enough information now to go on. now, i have to get to work to have a look at all the stuff i think is normal on the boat, that a potential buyer would not. Work work work, but that's why we own big boats, right?

Well good new to report, Spincycle is sold and closed. I used Russ Schaefer from Bollman yachts, Russ is a great broker. The guy works like a dog out there, running down prospects, getting your yacht on the top 5 in the internet listings, so when i used to do a google search of a 54' hatteras ED, mine always came up first or second, not quite sure how he did that, but we stayed on top of the internet "hit list" for 4 concesutive months. We started out by leaving the boat here in clearwater and started with a solid showing a week, it dropped off around christmas time and was slow to start in the new year. We decided to take her down to Ft. Launderdale and by doing that the showings increased two fold, had a few offers in feb and march and then in april a serious offer took it. All the time spincycle was in Launderdale, russ took care of everything, i mean everything, went out of his way everything. Found me economical dockage and captains, one time we needed a few more fenders, russ goes to sailor sams and buys used ones( he didn't have to, could have stuck me with the bill for new ones) wheel mount broke off the Marquip ramp, Russ takes it to get welded, i could go on, but i don't want Russ to get a swelled head :)
Cheers to a good Yacht broker, who took care of his Client, from listing the boat right through to closing. Smooooth Transaction.

Congrats on the "second" best day in a boaters life.

Looks like the sales cycle took 9 months with everything done right.

Question to brokers - Is 9 months typical in this market?

Congratulations. Nice to hear you had a good sale experience with your broker. I spoke to Russ right after I bought my boat. He sold it a few years ago to the previous owner. Great guy. He went out of his way to get me more info on the boat. Pretty impressive considering he knew there would be no business for him.

I'm curious how your actual sale went. Did you lower the price at any point? What percentage off the asking price did you settle with? Any excessive or unusual concessions made to the buyer?

Actual sale was what i expected, 15% off asking price and some minor engine concessions after sea trail, Russ smoothed things out with buyer and both parties were happy. ingredients to a good deal i always say!!
all in all, it was what i expected t oget for the boat considering the factors that are against us currently.

Is nine months typical? I think it is hard to say any sale in the current market is typical but that is not out of the ordinary. Moving the boat to Fort Lauderdale right away would make a difference, we have a much more national and international clientel than boats located in other areas. Of course the most important factors are price and condition no matter where the boat is located.
