  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
54' MOTOR YACHT (1985 - 1988)
Can someone please post pictures or describe the engine room air compressor setup of an 80s era MY ? Did I read that the air compressor was originally engine driven ? I still have the tank mounted to the wall . Previous owner installed a portable tank type compressor up in the flybridge doghouse to run the air horns but I'd like to put it back to original or close to original.
Would installing a 110v compressor unit atop the tank be an option?

Thanks in advance

You could probably do that, but it would mean your horns would only operate when the compressor was running.

Do you have the engine driven compressor?
No, this was not original for Hatts.
To many engine configurations (TA's) that could not offer this option.

What "80s era MY" are you referring to? What engine models do you have?

Usually the ACv air compressor were near the gen-set(s).

My 89 port 892 has a pump on the accessory drive at the back of the motor.

Mine had a compressor on the port engine with a tank on the wall above the inboard access hatch. It was probably a good option 50 years ago but nowadays getting an electrical compressor and tank is a much better option as long as you run the gen under way

We have Air-Push windshield wipers and air horns. Re-enabled the engine driven air compressor on our 12V71Ti quickly after purchase.
We do still have a 230Vac 5Hp air compressor also.
Only run when air tools air used or after the fireworks.

Most DDC-TAs won't allow the direct drive air compressor as the alternator is back there.

I did not realize many Hatts came with direct drive air compressors.
When I did see an install, assumed it was added on after factory. Often looked like it.

I also had a rear engine mounted compressor on my 871. When I repowered I mounted an air compressor on the same wooden bracket that the old tank was mounted on. I cut down the bracket and put a piece of plywood across the empty span.

Mine came on the port motor. I rebuilt it when I bought the boat because the air leaked out quickly. Once rebuilt the pre lasts a few weeks.

When I installed my new stabilizers I removed the engine driven air pump and used that drive for the pump for the stabilizers.

Was there room on the other motor?

Yes, but the tank for the stabilizers fit best iN that engine room and I had already installed electric wipers and a self contained horn system.

Had a Bendix compressor driven off the port engine. Eliminated it due to concern of secondary damage to the main engine of the compressor failed. Replaced with a separate 12 VDC compressor.

Thanks all for the input. My 86 MY has 8v92ti s in it. It may have originally had what Pascal described since there is evidence of such an install above my inboard engine access hatch on the port side.
