Some genius put a 110V water pump in my 53MY before I bought it. Works great when there's A/C but I don't usually run the genny at night or while cruising and my inverter won't handle the startup surge required by the 110v pump motor.
It looks like the best and least expensive way to fix this is to add a 32 volt fresh water pump side-by-side in the system with the 110V pump. I ordered a Shurflow Extreme (about $200) 32V pump. Is there any reason I can't just plumb a "Y" in the supply pipe before and another "Y" after the 110V pump so they both pull from the same supply pipe and both pressurize the same captive air system? The Shurflow pump is one of the new "on demand" pumps so it doesn't really need the captive air tank, but I'm assuming that the two pumps will cut in and out on their separate PSI's and their anti-backflow checkvalves will stop any circulation in the parallel water lines and not interfere with each other. Do you think it will work OK??

water pump

Doug,

I have both a 110 and a 32 on my 53ED. They are plumbed together and I leave both on all the time. I set the PSI's to come on at different high and low pressures, i.e. the 110 is my primary and the 32 comes on only if the 110 pressure falls to the max of the 32 pump. That way I do not have to prime when I go to dc power etc. I was also having a problem with my vaccum heads causing the 110 pump to loose pressure and need to be reprimed, i.e. if the pressure was at the low end but not the min to kick on the pump, when the head was flushed it went to low and the pump lost prime. If that happens now the 32 pump kicks on and the pressure is maintained. It is a great set up and works well.
I hope the above makes sense to you. Good luck.

Dennis,

Thanks for the response! That's what I was hoping would work. Are yours plumbed "parallel", like separate pipes that both pull from the same tank pipe and pressurize the same water supply pipe?

dual pumps

As I understand what you are saying I think it is. However, it has been nearly two years and I cannot remember. I know they are both pressurizing the same supply line and there is only one "equalizing pressure tank" near the PSI's. I think the 32 pump is just "t'd" in the line prior to the intake (supply side) of the 110 pump from there to the input side of the 32 pump and then t'd back in the output line of the 110 pump (from the output side of the 32 pump). Does this make sense???

I am going back to the boat on Monday and will check it out if you want me to. However, I am heading South down the TennTom to Mobile (450 miles and 12 locks)and will not be checking my e-mail. I have a Sat phone with a data line but the data line is slow (28bps) and I normally don't use it for the internet. If you want me to call you send me an e-mail to mrnstar@bellsouth.net with your phone # and I will contact you before I depart or enroute with the exact setup. Let me know on the forum what you want to do.

hey
what size inverter do you have
what is the hp on the water pump...
I had both 32 and 110 on my boat for yrs ...
the 32 never was used so I removed it
home depot has a 1/3 hp 110 pump that I use...has worked great for yrs

What is the advantage to a 120V water pump in addition to/instead of the 32v? I don't understand why it would be useful to have both and I even less understand why the 32v should be removed. If you only have a 120v then you only have water with genny/shore power. I can't see any possible value in this but I'm certainly willing to learn...

Mike,

A lot of folks feel the 110 pump maintains pressure smoother which results in a more even flow of water. I have both the 110 and 32 but I installed mine as a back up. I once lost my 32 on a trip and the Admiral was not happy with no water for a couple of days. Once I installed the vaccum heads that use fresh water (which is a great feature) I sure feel good knowing I have a 100% backup! Since the 110v is considered better (and it seems to be to me), I use it as primary and the 32 as secondary. But, as I explained above they are both on but with seperate on/off pressures so the 32 only comes on if the 110 is off i.e. not hooked up to shore or not running the generator, or it looses pressure for some reason.

It is cheap "insurance" to have the second pump and it gives you more options. I would never remove either one of mine. I like the set up.

Pumps

Dennis,

No need to check further. You and I are describing the same setup, so I think it'll work. If you notice something on your boat that is otherwise, call me at (630) 584-7919. Many thanks.

Others - I like the 110V pump with captive air system. Lots of pressure and works fine when I'v got 110V power. Adding the 32V pump in parallel gives me water at all times and redundancy. My inverter is only 1200 watts, so it runs the referigerator and laptop fine, but it can't handle the surge of the 1/3 HP pump on startup.

dont know which style of pump the newer boats have
but the 1972 that I have ....had the kind with the wheel and plunger type ...never worked good ...little pressure ..
OH well we all decide to do what we want...
Not sure why some would put toooo small of an inverter in the boat...the price differences are not that much...
this is a hatteras............
I have a 3600 watt with 12 ...6 volt batteries
wired too the full panel
have 2 freezers for fishing in the cockpit
main refrig with ice maker
icemaker in aft deck
fans in all the rooms.... tv's in all the rooms ...
the only thing I turn off when we go to bed is the 110 water pump so if the girls wash their hands at early am it wont kick the inverter off.if it needs to repressure itself..
been this way for 10 yrs ...many trips to the bahamas.
just never had ay problems....didnt try to overengineer it
K.I.S.S.
WORKS FOR ME

Re: pumps

I understand the logic now...Thanks. I might consider adding a 110 pump at some point.
