  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
I need an insurance survey and was recently quoted $1,800 for my '53. That seems a bit high at almost $34/ft. My last survey was at $24/ft. Have things changed that much in 3 years?

Depends on where of course. I just had my 46 done for the same reason. $18 per foot including 10% discount since they had done my previous survey. Madeira Beach Florida.

Last survey I had done was full repurchase survey for the 116 two years ago and it was $50 a foot. Insurance survey will be less as it a much more simple. I m having one done for the same boat this week so I ll post the rate when I get the bill. Yep… insurance company want a survey every three year as the boat is “old” being a 2005…

Is the cost including the haulout?

I am on the West Coast and I charge $20.00 a foot. Some guys charge more but $24.00 a foot is the most I see out here. On boats over 90 feet I am $25.00 a foot. Sometimes the higher costs are due to travel expenses. Most of us charge to travel out of our immediate area.

Well, I contacted the surveyor who did the purchase survey. He quoted 25/ft. Guess I'll be going back to him.

I just paid $2300 for an out of the water survey for a 58 LRC on west coast of FL.

That comes to about $40/foot.... did NOT include haul out charges.

Insurance or pre purchase survey? Very different, both require a short haul but the insurance survey doesn’t require a sea trial or testing of any equipment.

At least that was my experience yesterday when I had an insurance survey done on the 116 I run. Cost was $30 a foot

For Insurance.

However, I was informed by the insurance broker to have the surveyor conduct the survey as if it was a pre-purchase as their underwriting was getting more and more restrictive here in FLA on boats over 50 feet and more than 25 years old.

One very odd thing that did happen.... I got a litany of questions from the underwriter AFTER the policy was written. Most of them related to operation of the boat and what "crew" was being used. I told them the truth in that occasionally I hire a professional, certified CG 100-ton Captain to run the boat so I can relax and be more host than captain. I've also hired him to help me bring the boat for maintenance about 45 minutes from my marina when I had no other "crew" available.

The underwriter latched onto the hiring of a professional captain and almost cancelled the policy over that.

I found that VERY odd. The way I look at it, the hiring of a professional captain would be a positive and not grounds for cancelling the policy.......

I was taught that there is no such thing as an Insurance survey. So I conduct all my surveys as if they are pre purchase surveys. If a surveyor does a less than complete survey for an insurance company and there is a claim how long do you think he will be in business.
