I know this is a perfect question for Randy. What are the options for getting a boat...say 40-50foot...to the East Coast from Knoxville area on the Tennessee River? Destination, the Chesapeake in Virginia.

truck (ain't gonna happen) or down to Mobile Bay... Over to Fla.... across from Ft Myers to Stuart thru Lake O ( depth permitting) then up the ICW.....

Just about what Randy and I did with our delivery trip with our boat .Knox to Chat to Decatur on to Pickwick Hang a left at Yellow Creek which is the start of the Tenn Tom Down to Mobile on to Carravelle to StienhatcheeThen down to Pine Isle and hang another left on the lake to St lucie Canal.Better be a great deal.It gonna cost a bundle .We busted ass and made a hundred miles a day and We spent 3Kon fuel and our is relitively easy on the fuel at 8kts.What kind of boat is it?

Agree that trucking is probably a non-starter, but check it out to see if it is possible with the boat you're looking at. It will be quicker - if that's your goal. On the other hand, a delivery by water is a wonderful opportunity, if you have the time. From Knoxville to the Gulf is aproximately 1000 miles, add to that another aproximately 1800 miles from Mobile to Norfolk. That's 1/2 the Great Loop. So, if it were me, I'd view the trip as a perhaps once-in-a-lifetime journey and take my time. If you just want to get from here to there quickly, and can't truck it, consider the costs in fuel and wear [including on the captain and crew] of a delivery trip. As an earlier poster said, it better be a really good deal.

theres also the other half of the circle .miss. to Chicago great lakes to erie canel to the Hudson, atlantic coast to del.bay cd canel to chesapeke bay. not faster but once in a lifetime?

Good point! From Knoxville to Chicago is about the same distance as to Mobile.

You can't get there from here. :)

Seriously, as has been pointed out, it's either down and across Florida and back up, or up, over, and down. That being said, if the beam is 16' or less, truck it. What are you looking at?

It really depends on the boat but most 40-50ft boats can be trucked without issue. Unless you're running at hull speed, fuel cost will be significant for that trip. Hell even at hull speed you'll probably spend around 12K on fuel.

I brought a boat from Baltimore to Kentucky Lake and am now bringing my new LRC from Ft Lauderdale to Nashville. Currently underway in Alabama. I would say that the delivery may be as much fun as you will ever have with the boat. And you will know the boat. My current plan is to win the lottery and do this full time. I think the only thing holding me back is they say you have to play to win. My fallback plan is to save money and retire. I hope this isn't twice in a lifetime.

I did this with my last boat a few years back. Had to bring the boat down the river to Harbortowne Marina in Vonore, TN because there was no lifts in large enough in knoxville and our transport co wasn't able to haul it out on a ramp. The yard removed the bridge and built a cradle and we trucked it to the coast and had the bridge reassembled. Used a TN native transport guy Ray Culotta (Boat-Transporter.net). Everyone involved did a great job, but the whole thing turned out to be more expensive than I anticipated and ate up most of the savings from the purchase. Like everyone said -- has to be a REALLY good deal. Oh and I also traded in my previous boat, so I had to truck that from Montauk, NY to Knoxville too -- not sure wtf was I thinking on that one. Boats make you do crazy things.

Well, the boat that made me start this thread is scratched off the list due to unrealistic sellers. But I figured I'd post that the boat was trucked from Ohio to Knoxville this past year. They removed the flybridge and trucked it...then reinstalled it.

It was a 48c.

Don't you just hate it when they won't give it away

The are hard line at a number significantly higher than what nice updated 52C's are going for....and it's all 1980's interior. Just saying.

Randy, should he remove one prop or is that just for up-river runs?:D
