  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
32' FLYBRIDGE FISHERMAN (1983 - 1987)
I am Presently considering re powering a 1987 32' Flybridge.

She presently has 454's which run fine but i need more efficiency and range since i am considering doing a little charter fishing this summer.

Would appreciate input from anyone familiar with this boat and maybe that has re-powered. I am looking at the 370 6BTA cummins. The 370's are same size as 330 HP but since the boat weighs 20000 lbs wet with no passengers or gear i think she can handle the HP (but open to comment).

Also any input on what is the best gear

Also saw a couple of Nanni Yanmars for a good price any input on those in the 330-370 hp range.

I also looked at the Yanmar 315 and 370 but they are pricey

Thanks

Either the cummins or the yanmars will work. The question is what are you looking fof in range and speed.

My dad has a 31 Tiara with 200 hp yanmars that runs sweet an 1+ MPG on plane.

The Cummins engines are a better deal. 330s would probably be plenty of power in that size boat. The 330s and 370s are both available on the Cummins reman market- don't know where you are but I have had very good luck with T&S Marine Engines in Crisfield, MD. (ask for Timmy, or Dave) You will need ZF down angle gears to go with them.

Find Tony Athens' web site (Seaboard Marine in CA) and read all of his comments about the Cummins diesels- he has sold and installed a lot of them and has plenty of useful things to say and do. His version of the vapor recirculator, the Envirovent, is the best one out there- much better than Airseps or Racor CCVs. Also look at his fuel filter systems, which are very good as well. He has an updated seawater pump, too, for these engines, which is reputed to be a lot better than the OEM unit. You also want to disassemble the aftercoolers and regrease all the seals within the first hundred hours of use- this is just all standard stuff to help the engines live a long and healthy life.

Have fun; they are great motors, and very reliable in my experience so far.
