Back to Sky's question, I have seen (but not used *for a week*) both the Yeti and Pelican.

The Pelican looks really beefy, but if I was in the market I would probably just get the Yeti since the others seem to be trying to be "as good as" but not exceed.

If they get opened frequently, they are not all that much better than a regular cooler.
 
After looking through the thread I noticed no one recommended FrigidRigid. They are out of Florida. Not cheap but if Hatteras made a cooler this would have been it. Watch the video all the way through as they have some great features including an option for a lid that allows the cooler to go flush against a bulkhead.

I've seen them at shows and they are well built but I didn't want or need to spend that much. That is why I bought the Yeti since construction is similar.

The key to these type coolers keeping ice longer is to condition it before using. The day before a trip, I fill it with ice and water to bring the temperature down and get the foam insulation cold. Then I dump and pack it with beverages/food & plenty of ice and usually I get 5-6 days before replenishing. Even then, the melted ice water is very cold.

As for regular coolers, they are not the same, especially when placed in the sun.
 
Link for FR doesn't seem to work. They do make a coffin, or they say they do. Interesting.

My dingy is a Rigid Boat made by Frigid Rigid. So the seat is the Frigid cooler with a cushion and seat back. I also have a Yeti but I can attest the the Frigid is a really really nice cooler. As is the boat. And you are right, it does look like the cooler that Hatteras would make.

To be expected have same problem with refrigerators and a.c in the house :p:p
 
For the difference in price you can buy a lot of igloos and ice! The new igloos do pretty good. But like anything else there is no magic to the technology thicker insulation less thermal loss. The down side is either reduced volume or bigger size.

Guess you never dealt with cryogenics I build thing called warm fingers one side is 4.2K Helium temps to room temp in less than 1/2" of thickness.
There is some Technology to it but yes not Magic but not just a matter of More is better!

Adding Ice has been done and I spent $55 in ice for a 10 day trip keeping beer cold, plus if your not there every other day during the week to add it you done.

Apparently you don't know who your talking to! I designed Walt Disneys cryogenic coffin! I also played golf on the dark side of the moon with Brian Williams wearing our 3 mil space suits in absolute 0 temps!!
Seriously your talking apples to sausages. Look at all these hi end coolers the interior volume suffers with the extra thickness of insulation. Plus if you want your ice to last buy it by the 50lb block instead of overpriced half melted drink cubes from the quickly mart.
Ice picks aren't only for killing zombies you know!

Try finding any Block Ice while cruising :p

Just doesn't happen around here and I always ask! I leave with it in my coolers sometimes one cooler just filled with block but those shit Igloo its gone fast!
 
I stuff all the empty space in my freezer with bottles of water. I then add what I want to my Yeti, fill it with the small water bottle block ice and then add ice in addition if needed. If the bottles melt, I can drink them. I then just put the water bottles back in the freezer for next time. Saves on ice costs big time.

Yes the thicker insulation makes the inside a little smaller but Yetis are rated by the number of beer cans they hold. Just buy the size you need. They will outperform cheaper coolers whether you open them a lot or not. And you can stand on them. I use mine as a step when boarding my Whaler.
 
Practical Sailor in 2008 tested Engel, Coleman and Yeti under identical conditions. Engel won with Coleman right behind.
Granted these are sailors.
I really would like to see a 1 year follow-up test.
 
I have both of these, Engel and Icey-Tek and I like them both. Ice last for days in these. I always over bought when it comes to ice because I was so use to an igloo. Now I only pack a couple of bags instead of filling it up with ice.
 
My Yeti is nice ice chest, but not so nice when it is necessary to carry it by yourself. The igloo with wheels gets more use here.
