Anyone know what the purpose of these 6' long cabinets might be?

  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
54' EXTENDED DECKHOUSE (1989 - 1992)
There are 2 of these near the aft door. 6' long, 3' high, about 4" wide. Has a latching door on each. I don't really want them but don't want to get rid of something that has a specific purpose. Any ideas of why these are on my boat?IMG_6278.webp

Storage for rolled up paper charts? (Anybody remember those things?)

Weapons storage for repelling pirates.

fishing rod storage is the only thing I can think of, and there are much better solutions out there. Are there racks inside? If not, maybe someone made them for something that is no longer even on the boat. I'd say you're safe in removing them... Out of the 2 years we owned Pau Hana I removed easily 500lbs of stuff that no longer served any purpose but was still onboard. At least 100lbs of that was wiring in the upper and lower helms that was cut at both ends but left in place after whatever it was serving was removed/upgraded/replaced.

Folding table / chairs storage??
Can you contact the previous owner?
If you have nothing that fits, Toss them.

Possibly for a boarding ladder?

Yes. I have them out whenever I travel. The GPS chartplotter is the "backup".

and THATS why I like Skycheney! Old school should be the ONLY school. Hard to get caught with your pants down when you have your bases covered.....just saying

Yes Skye..... I usually put my sextant on top of my charts to keep them rom rolling up, LOL.

Laugh all you want, but for the first 5 or 6 years I boated in Fishers Island Sound, I always had a paper chart open.

I only had local ones on Pau Hana but I had paper charts. I had a list on the NOAA site of what I would need once we started more extended cruising, and I learned chart corrections/updates on my first CG ship.

Speaking of paper charts, who recalls Predicted Log contests? I tried to get a few friends interested but they rarely even turn on the vhf. Enough said

Laugh all you want to. I still write down times at known positions, especially at night, so I can always figure my position if all electronics crash.

Again referencing my CG days, you were the boater we loved... Friend of mine at a small boat station asked caller in distress for location and they said "Lake Superior".

Stowing your canvas/isenglass panels?
