  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
48' YACHT FISHERMAN (1972 - 1975)
Preparing to reseal my output flange and shaft and I need to remove the output flange on an Allison M20.

Where can one get the special socket for the output flange nut?

The manual says to build one and gives no specifications.

Thanks for any help provided!

Now that I have discovered that the tool I'm looking for is called a "spanner socket" I managed to find a helpful thread on this forum for those that are going to be attempting this repair (I believe there are a few people looking at doing this in the near future for either MH or M series transmissions based on threads I've read over the past month or so.)

I've also discovered what I believe are the specs for the nut based on the part number, which I believe for the M20 is 6700015. That puts the nut diameter at 2.960in and 0.500in thick with 2in-18 thread. The 4 drive points are 0.125in deep by 0.250in wide.

All that said - I'm still looking for the spanner socket that fits and any help finding one would be appreciated.

Thank you!

Just curious why you are replacing the seal? We had a leak at the coupling and hoped it was the seal. Turns out it was the inner bearings being worn causing the shaft to wobble and spit the oil past the seal. We’re in the middle of an R&R of the transmission to a new rebuilt tranny.

I'm replacing them because I have an oil leak on the port side.

Acadian suspects that it is the output flange that is actually leaking, but if I'm going to have the output flange off to seal it with their recommended 518 flange sealer then I may as well replace the output shaft seal while I am in there. They are inexpensive in the grand scheme of things and should be the easy part - probably easier than finding the flange nut socket! :D

Of course once all of that is off then I will be able to see if there is also a bearing issue, but I don't suspect that to be an issue at this point. Fingers crossed.

Sending good luck your way. It wasn’t the case for us. Anclote suspects it’s a shaft alignment problem that created the situation.

I replaced the seal on one of mine and it was good for many years after that. Good luck.

Where did you find a spanner socket? :)

I think my guys at our shop at the quarry had one or made one for me. Can't remember exactly.

I mustve missed that class.

Im sorry, I jumped the gun! Im all on with the shaft coupling; DUH! You might have to struggle to get at the trans coupling nut. After you replace the seal, make sure you put some sealant of your choice on the trans spline as well. Theyll leak through that too. I had Kalamazoo Gear do mine and it was completely apart within 30 minutes. If youre up to making your own, buy a correct sized socket off ebay, cut it down and grind or machine 4 slots for some key stock and weld them in. 0407190 is the socket number from Allison. You might get lucky.

Thanks, I've been talking to Brian at Acadian and he has been really helpful. Waiting on a drawing for the spanner socket and spanner nut for the "M20" (I believe it is different than the "MH20" one that you have.) I'll probably have to machine one of these out of a socket - I just don't have any dimensions to work off of yet, and I'd really like to have that tool when I head to the boat in a week and a half.

I have the seal already and will have a pile of 518 flange sealant for the splines, as per Brian's recommendation.

It's all about acquiring or fabricating a spanner socket at this point, and I haven't been "lucky" with that so far. There is no part number in the manual, it actually says "fabricate locally" and offers a drawing with no dimensions that has "FABRICATE" as the model number.

For what it is worth, the MH and M series do use different Output Flange Nuts. The MH nut is model number 6771999, and the M is model 6700015. I can't assume they use the same tool because I know nothing about the nuts, but maybe they do.

The M series nut uses a cotter pin through a hole in it to secure it, and the MH has a staking flange with no cotter pin. (I had to look up what "staking" was...)

I do have the service and parts manuals for these, they aren't helping me figure out how to build quite an important tool that is required. :)

If you elect to DIY, you can access the flywheel from the front side of the trans to lock it up for removal. Its it the owners manual about "Emergency Forward Clutch Engagement". If the trans has to come out, Id stronly recomend swapping the engine rear main seal. If that leaks it goes directly INTO the trans causing overfill and black oil.

I've got a way to DIY it off by locking only the flange to the hull, not concerned about that at all. The trans will stay in, if it ever comes out I will definitely replace the rear main engine seal (that is already on the list if it ever comes off.)
