Hi All,

Does anyone know of a really good airless paint sprayer for say under $225.

Going to use it in my cockpit project.

HI All,

A friend just suggested the graco proshot airless cordless paint sprayer....anyone have any experience with it.

Graco is top of line production equipment. the problem with airless is the amount of product needed to clean up and run though the gun and hose. Your not going to run a quart of product through the gun very efficiently. If your using expensive two part poly paint it will be cost prohibitive for a small job like a cockpit. You might want to look at one of Gracos HVLP rigs. or a small Wagoner Diaphragm spray rig. Airless rigs need at least 25' of hose to smooth out some more like 75'. I'm not familiar with the model your mentioning so this is general information. Graco has new fine finish rigs that use air pressure as well as a high pressure nozzle to atomize the paint. these rigs as well as some of the smaller Gracos have a 1 gallon pot that feeds the pump. It still takes a gallon or so of solvent to clean the rig. So it's an expensive way to spay in small batches. If your using lp paint it can be rolled and tipped with a brush with excellent results. All that said given a reasonable amount of paint an airless is the only way to go.

Gene,
I wouldn't know one paint sprayer from another, but I did know a guy who painted automobiles and he used his automobile equipment and paint to spray the WOOD hull of his boat...flawlessly..... and it lasted with brilliant shine...... so maybe an auto supply store would be a resource for a sprayer??.

Regarding two part poly's, I brushed and got pretty good results in my own cockpit but wind, humidity and sun made it difficult for me to get the finish I was used to with plain old one part alkyds...and that two part poly sags easily. I was advised if spraying two part to first apply a very thin coat to vertical surfaces, wait until it got tacky, then spray the "real" coat ....apparently the tacky undercoat helps prevent sags....Anybody with experience use that approach??

With the cost of paint, stay away from the airless sprayer, go to a paint supply place and get a cheap "gravity feed hvlp gun" and you will have the perfect combination to spray the amount of area your talking about. Make sure to completely and thoroughly clean your gun immediately after using it, before the paint sets up or be prepared to throw it away once the paint sets up. Dial it in so that you have a large needle for the thick awlgrip and then open it up so you spray a lot of paint when you pull the trigger. It can come out so thick that you almost get no overspray. But then be carefull so it doesnt get too "lumpy" with "orange peel" Takes a little practice , but results are worth it and its the cheapest way to do it.
By the way the "gravity feed hvlp gun" is the gun with the cup above your gun , hence "gravity feed. The other siphon guns need a lot more air to get the paint to the nozzle, and you get a lot more overspray because of this.
Harbor freight, northern tool, all have them.

Airless paint sprayers use to much paint in order to use it with 2 parts polyuretanes, I would also recommend to go with an HVLP gravity paint gun, it would be more efficient.
Good luck

I owned a body shop for many years and can tell you hvlp is the only way to go. Another good product for adhesive removal is brake cleaner sprayed on a clean white rag or white paper towel. Make sure any paint around it is cured though.
