  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
Not Currently A Hatteras Owner
Hello,

First let me thank the Hatteras "Gods" that take time to share all of the info/experiences on this board that we all rely on. I have learned an amazing amount of priceless information which has helped me many times.

I am pleased to report that I have finally found my dream boat, a one-owner 1973 58 Yachtfish which I purchased this June. I took her from Palm Beach, FL home to Madisonville, LA in early August with zero problems the whole trip. What a cruise!

Now that she is in her new home (and survived Hurricanes Katrina and Rita), I am beginning to freshen her up a bit while staying as original as possible. The early 1970's boats came with teak swim platforms from the factory, then fiberglass from the mid-1970's-on due to better strength and durability. My wife and I would like to go with the original look and have a teak swim platform built to the original specs, but I cannot seem to find a clear picture of a teak platform that is original. Over the years, so many have been replaced with upgraded or larger platforms, often made of fiberglass.

I have looked at pics of every boat on this site and other sites, including tons of boats for sale online but nothing clear or conclusive. If anyone has an early 1510 with a teak swim platform, could you PLEASE email a picture to me at vrmmm@aol.com? This seems to be the only way to be sure I have the correct original design duplicated. I spoke to Hatteras Yachts today, and they told me that they produced them off of a jig, which is no longer around and that they no longer have any pics or drawings/dimentions. Hatteras actually suggested that I post on this forum to ask for pictures.

Sorry for the long post! Once again, I applaud all who make this board possible.

Best Regards,
Byron

Byron,

I've got one on my 1978 53MY, which I believe is original. I'm willing to take pix and measurements, but I will not be down at the boat for about 10 days. I can pretty well imagine what pictures you'd want, and I can post them to Shutterfly so you can see them and order hard copies or ask me to e-mail you the large data size images.

Let me know if that's what you want.

i've gotten teak platforms from butlermarine.com before. very good workmanship. they seem to have templates for many boats. i wonder if they would work with you on a custom platform from pics.

I love to hear of Hatt owners that want to keep everything "original". After seeing so many with painted interiors, chopped up galley remodels, and the like, it's great to know that some of us just love these boats as they were made. It's kind of like seeing a restored car with a rear bumper from the wrong year on it. It's just not right.

Gentleman, I thank you for the responses.

Nonchalant1, I would be more than happy to wait until you get back to your boat. If I happen to aquire the pics or info earlier I will let you know ASAP. All I really need is a couple of pics emailed to me if possible. One looking down from the transom and one showing the transom view from the side. I am most concerned with the curve on the ends and the number and shape of slats in the platform for the water to flow through on backdown. If you can get a length and width without too much trouble, that would be fantastic!

Salty, Thank you for the link to Butler Marine. Their site looks good and I will call them tomorrow to inquire. I have been looking seriously at the woodworkingforwatercraft.com site and they seem to have excellent quality as well. They have produced teak platforms from the mold of an original fiberglass platform. I just want mine to look like the original teak one, not a teak version of the later fiberglass one. Thanks again!

SKYCHENEY, Right on man! Thanks for the support. I had been looking for a 58YF for about three years (while enjoying my '67 41' Twincabin) and had passed on many boats that were subjected to "upgrades" that were far from what Hatteras intended and many that had painted interiors as well. I finally found a one-owner boat who apparently liked it just as Hatteras designed it as well because it is still almost exactly as it was when it was delivered to him in late 1972. I am remodeling my galley but I am merely replacing what was there, with new appliances in their original locations, even down to replacing the original Modern Maid convection oven with a new convection oven. The hard part is deciding on what type of flooring to go with in the galley, forward stateroom and engineroom hallway. The original vinyl laminate is dated, and I believe that some type of wood floor is appropriate. Some later Hatteras' came with parquet wood flooring which is quite affordable, if not my very favorite. Teak and Holly looks fantastic and is a serious consideration as well.

Best Regards,

Byron,

Mine has oak wood finished to compliment the feather teak for the fwd stateroom, galley and ER hallway, including the stairs. I can do some pix of that too. I believe MikeP996 did a teak & holly floor on is out of some new age material discussed on a past thread, with pictures.

Doug,

I'll bet that oak looks great. I have been looking at oak parquet in the darker shades made by Armstrong to compliment the interior teak, simply because I have seen parquet floors in several 61CPMY's that I believe came from the factory. I should have some samples arriving this week. I have also followed the threads on the Amitco product. Apparently, there are several ways to do install teak and holly from plywood veneers to individual boards to the Amitco product. I am in the process of researching these options as well. I took the opportunity to board a 53MY yesterday that had oak flooring and it looked very nice (along with a commercial-style stainless oven in place of the original dishwasher!). I would love a pic of your galley floor. With whatever flooring I decide to go with, I am particularly concerned with making sure the hatches come out right. They do take some abuse from time to time and I want the edges to hold up and look like a factory install. Decisions, decisions!

Byron,
I have the factory installed parquet in my galley and pilothouse. I was thinking of trying to match it and also run in through the engine room companionway. If you need any pictures, let me know. I just refinished it this spring, so I am quite familiar with how the hatch was done.

Sky Cheney,

That would be fantastic if you could email me a pic of your galley floor and genny room hatch. Do you happen to know what wood the parquet is made of? I think that Hatteras may have used teak parquet. I have looked for teak parquet, but I cannot seem to locate anything other than oak. I greatly appreciate your time.

I think it is teak but I won't be able to get a picture for another week or two. That is when I plan to be back at the boat. I will take my digital camera with me and get some detailed photos of the hatch and floor.

No problem at all on the timeframe. THANK YOU!

Byron,

I took a bunch of pix of the swim platform today. I'll get some flooring and hatches set into wood floors tomorrow, and a few measurements from the swim platform. It will probably be easiest to just mail them to you on a CD so you can expand or use what you want. What's your address?

Doug

Nonchalant1, That would be wonderful if you do not mind mailing me a CD. My mailing address is:

THANK YOU!

SKYCHENEY, Those are excellent pics of your hatch. The edges look very nice the fit and finish is excellent. I can now see that this parquet floor project is going to be a bit more involved than originally anticipated, but most projects are! Thank you for your time!

Byron,

Mailed the CD and a sketch with measures today.

Doug

Doug, Thank you so much! GREATLY appreciated! I cannot wait to see the pics and check measurements. Please let me know if there is ever anything that I could possibly do for you.
