1968 Hatteras 50 Convertible

I am investigating information on a 1968 50 convertible. HIN 50C102. It is a project boat. Interior has been stripped and current owners will not finish. engines are rebuilt twin Detroit Diesels 12V71N with only 2 hours. With this engine change how will it effect the boat? I am thinking that those engines will be much heavier than the originals. The current owners did not do the engine swap and they can not tell me any of the engineering on the swap. They do not know if different props were used or original props. I do not have any experience with Hatteras and have not been able to find much information on this model year. It appears that the later 50's used this engine. The pictures of the 68 are much different than any that I have found on various sites. The hull does not have any windows or portholes. Could they have been glassed in? I am a new member and this is my first post. Appreciate any thoughts. They are currently asking $49,900.

I have a 67 50c the 12's were a option over the 8/71's in all years. My hull # is 50c305 are you sure its a 68? the first year for the 50c was 66. I've had the 50 for 35 years and know most of the 50's around. Its a solid boat and a little faster than the 53 with the 12n's. There were a few diferenced between the years. Last was 1969. In 68 they put the same aluminum rub rail as the 45. The boat is a lot heavier than the 45 and they would crush. PM me your phone # and I'll fill you in on what I know.

Cruise speed is maybe 16 -17 kts as I recall if those are still 525 HP 12V71N's....great engines, but monster size and weight for that HP......same engines as in the 58 ft MY of that era.

Unless there is proof positive those engines were REALLY rebuilt I'd skip that project entirely...unless you can get the boat at no more than 1/2 the asking price....that is not a bargain price but offers the opportunity to get an interior to your liking.

Tom's is a bare hull only. No decks or superstructure either. The 50C had lots of port lights so the one he is looking at was either custom or someone glassed them in.

Only 2 hours? get recipets or some kind of convicing data thet the engines are as stated. An overhaul on a 12V71 could go $20K or more. that is not the kind of thing to accept without making sure.

I would also suggest If the fresh engines are not a fact the boat may be over priced.

She needs an interior and paint and who knows what else. She is definitely overpriced.

Thanks for all all the input! When I actually see the boat I will post more info. If rsmith hull is 50c305 and is a '67 then the boat I am looking at must be older by the HIN. We just had another snow storm, which will delay my seeing the boat for a while. If any one wants to give me more advise on the 50c I can be contacted on my cell 319-830-1566.

Put on your fastest track shoes and run like the wind, You are looking at between 175 to 250 to but the boat in the 9 to 10 catagory and you still have a 150,000 boat. I belive most on the forum will agree Tim

Sorry Tim but I don't agree. This is not directed at you but I,m getting tired of some of the self righteous attitudes on the forum making profound statements when they no no details. I know the boat and its 90% complete with new gen, ac,paint, a lot of custom work, and fresh RB 12's. You guys do a disservice to people throwing out #'s If you havent even seen the boat. A lot of us do the work ourselves and do not pay yard prices. Not everyone wants to pay for a custom fancy interior. For me and a lot of people a functional chater boat interior will do. I run my boat hard and put it up wet and most of the guys on this forum would turn their noses up at it. I dont care about cosmetics but the mechanicals are solid. In 35 years and 10,000 hours I've never had the Detroits even hickup.
For less than 50k this boat could be stripped parted out and a profit turned.

In the grand picture here, I am but a pauper. Shoot, I bought a wrecked 58 TC for 50K and got it running and home 1200 miles and still have less than
100K into it. Is it perfect and shiny? Nope, not at all. I wish I could afford a rack full of golf shoes to issue to all the guests, instead of that soft shoe only BS !!
A few weeks ago, Ppat and I got some 300+ million dollar lottery tickets, and she said that if we win we can put the sub into a shop for a total refit. I told her she was nuts! WE'd give the sub to someone here that needs a real boat, and we could go shopping for 2 or 3 that would geographically serve us better.
So, as for being broke, we continue doing our own work with a sense of pride and accomplishment, and as always, say, ta hell with the judges! ws

I sincerely enjoy your opinion based on alot of experience but you seem to have a problem with opinions different than yours. I know I know they are wrong and don't know what they are talking about. If it bothers you so much that wrong, in your opinion, info is dispensed here I recommend turning off your computer or starting your own forum soley for experts such as yourself. Maybe you could try posting your "correct" info without taking a shot at the poster (ie Rbruekner). Once again I think you do know alot more than most on this forum but if you could teach without showing such seeming disdain for the students that would be better for the forum and would not contribute to all the catfights that get started. If I was putting a team together to build something or accomplish a goal you wouldn't make my team even though you might be the most experienced because you will blow a team apart with your style and seeming arrogance.

While I agree that not every boat needs to be in Yacht condition, I think this one is not worth the money based on what the listing shows and states.

I too would rather have a quality boat with perfect mechanicals and so so cosmetics than a cheapo that looks great. It all goes to what you can/want to spend. Not eveyone can afford a perfect boat and they should not be discouraged from buying a fixer upper if that is what they choose to do, providing it makes sense. If this boat is painted and has all the new mechanicals you stated then she may be a good deal for the right person. Based on this listing that doesn't seem to be the case. Also you need to really understand the current market conditions. Good 46CHP's are selling at or under 100K, good 53C's can be bought under 100K, good '87-89 55C's can be bought for 150K etc. Hard to justify 50K for a boat that may need another 50K+ when something better can be bought that will cost less in the long run and not require all the work.

Perhaps Mr. Smiths post was somewhat politically incorrect, it says it like it is. I second his opinion about people commenting on things they have never seen or done.

I don't know many people who will not agree Hatteras is a quality boat. So why not a quality forum? It really is tiring to google something for my own research, then come on the forum and some bozo has done a c&p of the article I just read or has paraphased an article, even making errors in their paraphrasing of the article.

We can all read, and look things up, why not refer to sources, rather than try to pretend to be the expert.

If people would keep to what they know from first hand experience, like actually turning a wrench, the forum might be better off.

As for being politically correct, if the politicians told us the truth instead of what they think we want to hear, we would be a lot better off.

Absolutely no arguement please note the numbers of 9 or 10 in my statement, Also note his coment of who knows what else it needed. I did not mean to upset any one but you know what the values are today. You also know what it takes to just keep one afloat forget cosmedics. If you dont eaven touch it you got 200 to 400 per month in slip dues plus electricity insurance and etc we all know what that can mean over a year.So just looking at that and putting it back together you reach the mark of no return fast. Bottom line go for it he ask for openions and got mine. I just finished one mine just a 45c and not a 50. Now i am actively lookig for a 52c.The hat bug has got me good. Just kinda belive that after putting a 1968 34c back together with a pair of 440 gas engins. which took 4 years,and a 1986 45c back from the grave which took about 3 years and managed to keep them as closs to original as possible. I may qualify to at least speak. True i did not see the boat just went on what was posted by the possible new owner. Still friends i hope Tim

I was not trying to start any heated discussion. I am just trying to find some one with knowledge on Hatteras 50 convertibles. I would agree with everyone that the boat is overpriced at $50,000. I have found out that the name of the boat is "RASCAL". It may have been on Ebay a few years ago. I have visited with a broker and he does not seem to know much about the boat because he referred me to the father of the owner. I am beginning to think that every broker out there scours the internet for vessels for sale and then attaches his name to the listing. I have been actively looking for the "right" boat for the past 2 years. Being from the mid west I have only looked at boats in the Great Lakes area. But, the Great Lakes area is probably the same as all other areas. When I find a boat that I am interested in it seems as if multiple brokers have the same boat listed. Excuse the ramblings, do any of you have knowledge of this boat. All I know is that the current owner's father is trying to handle the sale. It seems that his son in-law and friend bought the boat in Texas and then shipped it to Des Moines Iowa with the intention of refitting her. In the mean time the son in-law has filed bankruptcy and left the ex wife holding the "boat" and all the debt. I have no idea how much debt is on the boat. The father has told me that every thing is there to put the boat back together. What ever that means?? If indeed, every thing is there, the engines are refreshed, the ac's are new, one new generator and one rebuilt generator, how would I determine what the salvage value would be? I never intended to buy and salvage out a boat, but if I could buy the boat cheap enough ($20 to 25,000) could I make a profit? Maybe this post will start some new discussion. I have really enjoyed the discussion so far. All my friends have house boats on the Mississippi and they only want to go and have a "good time". They really have no interest in boats and boating, only getting away from home to be with every one else from town who wanted to get away. Looking forward to more discussion. I will have to get a complete listing of the parts for the boat and when I do I will post what they are.

You can't go sulk you need to go boating and just let the $HI^ flow under the keel like a boat without a holding tank.

From many posts here I can tell that those who cant do preach. Reality on that boat is that if someone wants to put their blood sweat and tears into it and make it something they are proud of good for them. It may not be a logical decision, It may not be a financially sound one either but it might be their dream to do the refurb.
