It is a fuel problem not that it is wrong filters. Filters should last hundreds of hrs and changing them any sooner is a waste of time and money. Ang do a search here on sam's for AJX and let the one's that have used it speak for it. There is no way a polishing can clean the hole tank with baffles. This has been told to me by people in the business for many years they just do the best that they can and every case is different.
Cleaning up a bad tank is very easy and there is no reason for clogging filter's my tanks are 40 years old and have no Sludge or slime and have never been polished and I run filters for mulitiple years.

Does anyone have a number for DD or the number of the drop in secondary fuel filter for a 1981 8V92 TI. Thanks Chris
 
I do need to polish the fuel, but it's not total sludge, either. The engine primaries have never gunked up - they've been dirty, but not a tar baby. I am changing the secondaries on the engines now because I have no idea who did it last and when - could have been when the engines were rebuilt back in 2000 or 2001 since the secondaries have engine paint on them. Changing them now will give me a baseline to fill in on my maintenance records and a starting point to monitor. Surprisingly, the secondary filters are cheaper than the Racor primary elements and because the secondaries are spin-ons and one of the easiest parts to access on my engines, it's not a big deal to change the secondaries. On my port engine, when I open the ER door, it's right there - no need to even enter the ER.

What brought this up is that I was at the store to get a couple cases of filters, and I realized that I was using 30 micron in the engine primaries and 2 micron in the genny primary and wondered if that was right or what the reasoning was. I was curious as to what the rest of you do and why. The only difficult filter to change (of all of the primaries and secondaries) is the tiny one on the genny - the one on the engine. Because 2 micron has always been used in the primary for the genny, that may be why we've only had to change the secondary once. And that was at about 450 hours, if that many.

I think my fuel levels are sufficient to get through CDR. We will either start polishing the fuel beforehand, if Ed has the polisher built by then, or we'll run the fuel level down and do it afterwards when there will be less fuel to polish. I will have LOTS of filters onboard. The current fuel condition is not disabling and the engines are burning it just fine (and they are polishing that tank, too). I may have to change the genny primary filter a few times over the long CDR weekend, but not every 30 minutes like we had to do at times last time (and that fuel is long gone!). Fortunately, the genny primary is located under the lifting steps of the companionway and there is no need to go into a hot genny ER to change it. Takes about 5 minutes to complete - it's just a nuisance when it happens in the middle of the night or when I'm cooking...something like that.

By the way, when I was at Florida Detroit Diesel last week getting parts, I asked if they had DieselKleen. They told me that DD recommends against any kind of additive whatsoever, including biocides or those used for performance boosting. Not debating the issue...just reporting what DD advised me.

You really want to start with the TCS If you have bad fuel such as this you can also add the TMS right with TCS for even better result. But it sounds like Ang wants to wait and change more filters. I don't care how easy they are its a PITA and every time your hands smell and there is just no need to go through all the BS........
 
I use the 2 or 3 filters for all the filters. better to keep stuff out than to get some past. Also the finer filters clean the fuel so much faster.

I did do some research into the AJX and found the people who use it have had great results. Luckily I do not have problems but I know Lt Dan will talk me into the maintenance stuff.

That being said I vote for the 2-3 Micron filters everywhere, Add the AJX and soon all the fuel will be clean. Then you can yacht with no problems.
 
I just looked at my RACORS the other day with a xenon flashlight, and they are full of BRIGHT RED CLEAR FUEL. Not even a drop of water at the drain! Thats about 40 hours on these. I STILL RECOMMEND getting the water out of the bottom of the tanks. EVERY diesel engine fuel tank Ive seen, except these, has a water drain. I'm lousy on the math, but fuel oil has something like 15 PPM of water from the distillation process. Its the nature of the beast. 30 + years of settling out gives you...
When I bought the sub in NOLA I pumped at least 30 gallons of water from each tank. After about 1000 miles last spring, I pumped another 5 gallons of water out of each tank. Now theyre spotless! Granted, the fuel pickups dont get down to the water level, usually, but that crud still grows in there! Youll NEVER polish that much out by running; its still in solution. PM me for the recipe! ws
 
Now Willy I think you are trying some new math. Either that or you got some pretty bad mileage. based on your numbers of 15 PPM and your getting 10 gallons out after the run ( 5 gal each) the math says you used about 670,000 gallons of fuel for the trip.
 
C'mon, thats only 446 GALLONS PER MILE !! Heres the deal; Bought the boat with almost full tanks. Pumped out the water. Refilled. Ran the boat 1500 miles + or - and gained another 5 or so gallons. The first time I pumped, I "felt" for the lowest corner of the tank. The last time, I pulled the fuel sender which sits into a well, the low-low of the tank. Since then, the RACORS are at 100% and the fuel looks perfect.
All I'm saying is that water will accumulate over time. In 1500 miles, I did the 2020s 2 or 3 times and the #2s once ( as a p.m. ) The mains never choked down once... thats TOO embarassing!
I have used about 8 gallons of DK so far also. Gotta go to the boat before traffic gets any worse... its 34 miles to the boat and will take 1-1/2 hours. Do the math LOL. ws

Wow they say the Island traffic is Bad I think you got us beat.

And yes Scott you do know it is better too take care of something and not just wait for it to be a PROBLEM!!!! :-}
 
The other consideration is the RPM you run the boat at. If you run 2000 rpm you obviously need more fuel flow ,if you trawler around you can get away with much less. I'm with the school of 2 micron primary and change them as needed and don't have to mess with the secondary at all. Also for the reason that Brian (I think) brought up with the vaccuum guages. They will last a long time at 1200RPM once the fuel is cleaned up................Pat
