  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
42' LRC - Mark I (1976 - 1978)
I need to replace the lines from the sea water strainers to the engines.

The old hoses and fittings are 2 7/8" ID.

I have plenty of 3" ID water/exhaust hose already on hand.

Do you think it will be an issue to use 1/8" larger hose in this particular case?

It will be fine until its not.

Do not try that. It's not the right way. Don't be a sailbloater

Larger never hurts.

The spec when built was the minimum required per cost. 2 7/8" is probably more expensive now days than 3"

Your expense would be new & proper hose barb fittings and needs to be weighed in with the hose replacement cost.

Please give us more details of your project and how it goes.

I’m pretty sure that’s the outside diameter for 2 1/2” pipe. It might seal if the hose doesn’t have a wire in it

I'm proposing putting 3" ID hose on a 2 7/8" OD fitting. It's hose with wire. It's a pretty short piece of hose (32") and is for the sea water inlet, so there should not be a lot of pressure on it. With 2 hose clamps on each end, perhaps it will seal?Curious if anyone has done this, before I go and ruin some $15/ft of good hose by cutting it up. Maybe I should just order the 2 7/8 hose to be safe? I'm less concerned with the cost than waiting for the hose to be delivered.

Just my opinion but get the 2 7/8 hose. My boat had 3" and i replaced it with 3" and found the barb's to be wrapped with black electrical tape. The best t bolt clamps would not not stop the air leaks. I switched it out to 2 7/8", cleaned the barb's and now now no air leaks, no headaches and piece of mind. A year ago I needed 6" exhaust hose and there was a four week wait time so I hope you don't have that issue.

Thanks, Walt! This is the kind of info that helps make my decision much easier!

A proper and safe installation would be a proper hose & correct size barb fitting always.
No pipe or tape. Proper hose clamps doubled up.
You will sleep better when installed correctly. Your insurance agent will also.

Keep in mind that if something unfortunate were to happen, such as (God forbid) flooding or sinking of your boat, your insurance company might notice something like this and try to avoid paying a claim. I would either change the hose bards to fit the hose you DO have, or buy the right hose for the fittings in the boat. It should all match, as noted above.
