Hatteras Model
43' MOTOR YACHT (1984 - 1987)
Closed this afternoon on Blue Bayou, 1985 43MY. Thanks to all who offered advice during the process. Hopefully will see the fiberglass guy tomorrow to discuss his quote for repair of the deck - the boat is staying in N Myrtle Beach while Marine Contracting Group reconfigures my waterfront, so if I get a good feeling from this guy, the deck might be done when I bring it home. Also need complete maintenance on generator cooling system with rebuild/replace on seawater pump, so I have a little scrambling to do tomorrow and Friday.

Congratulations Mike. This is a great site with a stellar group of owners. Everyone here is always willing to lend a hand and get you through any situation but you may have. Make sure you attach some photos so we can see your beauty.

Thanks. If I can get through my first night without sinking her, I'll take some pics and post them.

What's wrong with the pump? Sometimes it's easier to replace it and then rebuild the one you take out and keep as a spare.

Congrats Mike on purchase! As Seven has said, this is a great site. I just bought my first Hatteras in Little River there last March and brought her down to Charleston. I have a lot to learn about her but these folks on here are excellent to have as advice is from "Hatteras Owners" direct!
Good luck with your new adventure and look forward to pics as well!

Seven, I will post some of mine soon. Been busy offshore GOM working and net is a bit sluggish on board my ship! (company cutting down expenses)

Generator ran hot (but didn't alarm out) during survey and has some drips. Carpeting/furniture make hatch access for the genny painful, so cooling system maint appears to have been deferred. Ski recommended the maintenance with replacement of all hoses, seals, clean the heat exchanger, and replace/repair of the pump based mostly on antiquity. Good idea to replace plus rebuild for spare - that's what I'll do. On haulout we noted that all the intakes are somewhat fouled, so flow might be a little restricted from that too. I'll have those cleaned and apply antifoul (I can start another Prop Speed debate) when she's hauled to install the new transducers. Not sure if I'll have that done here before taking her home. It's a good thing I decided to retire - if I was still working, I'd have to quit.

James, I see you're online. I just sent you a friend request.

Thanks James. Advice here has already been great, and the archives are like a Hatteras users' encyclopedia.

James when you post, look back on a post I started called show us your helm. Take some shots of both and add them there as well.

Congrats on the purchase and welcome to the best forum you are ever going to find.

Regarding the pump, if this is a Westerbeke, they had some sort of design issue about 15 years ago and maybe much longer. I had a leaking raw water pump ten years ago when I bought Chateau de Mer, had it rebuilt, and a few years later the leak started again. The mechanic was familiar with the issue and suggested a new design pump or we'd have another leak. The new design has been trouble free for six years. I'd vote replace it and forget the rebuild of the old one.

Seven, I was going through that post the other night & was really nice to see what others have done. I need to refit my lower helm to remove outdated equipment. Will show before and after when I do it. I accepted request, thanks!

Thanks, it's an Onan (Kubota engine). Don't know any history for them, but I'll be researching it.

Don't toss out anything. There are a number of members always looking for parts. If you ever get ready to get rid on anything. Call or write me.

Congrats! My boat probably had the same generator (Onan 8 KW MDKD). It gave me more problems than my CATS. It's not that hard to remove the HX if you just straddle the generator with the hatch off. The photo below shows what the back side looks like (against the bulkhead). I circled the HX. It comes off by removing 4 bolts from the two brackets. You can also see how the hoses are routed.

I believe the RW pump is an Oberdorfer 202M-11. It is a bit of a pain to remove because you need to remove the start/stop solenoid.

Thanks for the info. Sorry to see you lost your boat.

Well, the AC seawater pump died this morning. And so it begins.

Whick pump is it?

Brand, model...

The original pump on my boat was a Cruisair PMA-1000 (March AC-5C-MD-115V). It was replaced with an Oberdorfer 104M-F13. Both 115 volt.

Should be about $500.

The first few months are the hardest- figuring out where everything is, where are the electrical panels are, and getting everything to work like it's supposed to. It gets easier.

Could be the relay that drives the pump. Been there done that twice. There is a small relay card that powers up the pump. On ours it is located on stbd side of the bilge in front of the compressors. Make sure you have voltage at the pump.
