Tomorrow I'll finish the V berth door frame and probably acid wash the EX dinette area in preparation for the washer and drier job. Before the galley frame gets done, I'll hafta go in and sand and paint the locker interiors... oh what fun

Bump to previous page... Pat sends her regards Dan!
... she in a stupor right now; she gets up at 3 am for work and I get up at 4 to join her for coffee. It gets me an early start for Hatterasin' all day!! ws

I still say you should write a book, something like "Repairing Hatteras yachts for Dummies" Bill, there was this guy that did a similar adventure with an old wood here:http://web.mac.com/tanyard/Site_6/pacemakerboat.com/pacemakerboat.com.html

Basically its an old woody Pacemaker he too spent a lot of time restoring, I followed his adventures several years ago until I decided a Hatteras is more towards my dreams.

If it was possible you should have a website like his.

Hey 6X6... are you volunteering??? LOL. I remember this guy well... I spoke with him several times by phone looking for parts etc. Where does he find time to entertain all those girls?? I wonder.
Man oh man... I hope I never have to own a woody like that! ws

I have no idea how to start a website Bill but I am sure its possible to find a volunteer, seriously the Hatteras community would benefit from being able to see history, your history anyway of bringing an old girl back to life, I'm constantly amazed at the woodwork you are doing, anyone else would have just bought a 55 gallon barrel of paint.

I work with concrete and I know what the lime does to my hands I can just imagine what yours must be like in the muriatic acid, I use similar stuff to REMOVE the concrete from my trucks, I hope it won't leach back out and cause health issues in an enclosed space, maybe you should have an ozone air treatment system? I keep the acid wash to a minimum, we have this citrus based stuff that emulsified the concrete splash, we just spray it on and then hit it with a high pressure washer the next day, it kinda turns into a soft mud, the acid though unless you absolutely wash it all off will eat the wiring, the hydraulic lines and of course any metals especially aluminum.
I do not know an exact chemical needed but have you asked about a neutralizer, use that as well?

I think part of the trick is to not overdo it. As you know, the stuff goes on like water. Look at the residue pic... thats from doing the whole vertical wall / door corner. I brush it on with a 2 inch brush. The stuff smokes a little bit on the organic contaminents and when it stops, I rinse well twice with water. Maybe I should mix a little baking soda into it but so far, I havent had any problems with varnish or paint sticking and lasting. The stuff is bone dry before any finishing is done and WELL sanded. Talk about exfoliation !!
After trying a TON of other remedies, the acid seems like a last line of attack.... but gets real results FAST; almost before your eyes. Today, Ill do some bigger walls, and take the cabin door to the V berth outside... supposed to be 60F today !! Pics tonite after I make ppat a shrimp and ribeye dinner; she deserves it! BTW... last month ( I just cleared my camera card), I had 460 pics and AVIs. I start a new pic file monthly. I sure am glad you dont need film and processing anymore ! That, and it would be impossible to share the pics here.
Did you bid on that 58YF on edog yet??? ws

I wish I had the nerve, I used to make these low bids on lots of stuff just for the heck of it knowing I couldn't actually afford it in the end.

I'm grounded unless its an out of the blue real steal of a deal, the absolute best i could have is an emergency fund I have stashed away but its only $2500.00.

Thats amazing Bill. Do you brush it on full strength? Hell of a smell I bet!

Hey Bill, lookin' good. You seem to work a lot harder when you're twitterpated.

Hydrochloric can certainly be nasty if it's strong enough, but there are worse things to have splashed on you. In a former life I used muriatic to wash down brickwork so I had plenty of experience with it. One time I was finishing up a chimney and had a scaffold plank snap on me. The fall wasn't too bad but I had a 5 gallon bucket of the acid fall upside down right on top of my head. Fortunately, I had a garden hose in my hand and I just squinted and squirted. Surprisingly, I didn't suffer any ill affects and I was back up to work in a couple of minutes. One word to the wise, however. Ventilate the best you can. Look around at any brass in the area, and figure it's gonna be a nice green color by the middle of summer.

Yep... kinda like a boner but different!! This is from
www.urban dictionary.com ws

Twitterpated:
1)to be completely enamored with someone/something.
2) the flighty exciting feeling you get when you think about/see the object of your affection.
3) romantically excited (i.e.: aroused)
4) the ever increasing acceleration of heartbeat and body temperature as a result of being engulfed amidst the exhilaration and joy of being/having a romantic entity in someone's life.

When he smiled at her, the rush of warm, fuzzy, excited sensations that filled her made her realize she was completely twitterpated with this man.

Yep... so I guess I am twitterpated! All I can say is today I got wood... and lots of it! ws

I agree that Bill should write a book or something. Every day it amazes me what he knows and can do. Lets all keep bugging him. In the mean time I just might know someone who can set up the web site for him. Let's take a vote to see how many people would read it.!! If you are in just let me know.

Lookin good. How did the ripped veneer repair turn out?

I vote that we save Bills efforts so that others can have a reference of knowledge, not everyone can afford a turn key boat.

That's one. Anymore? ppat324
