  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
I would like to mount a bracket on my transom for my dinghy motor. I am getting too old to carry it up and down the swim platform ladder.
Ideally i would like to mount it forty inches out from the port side portlight. Inside the aft wall closet i can only get 30" from the portlight and dont see any way to get access further out. My question is, Can i cut an access hole in the outside wall of that closet to reach thru ?
Also if i cut an access hole in the back of the closet, is there anything behind there to worry about?
My boat is a 1972 43 DC.

As always Thanks in advance

How big (heavy) is your motor? I would think you could make up a bracket for any motor you were carrying around and either screw it to the transom with #14 self tapping screws, or put something like a hellicoil in and screw to that. That method worked fine on my trawler with a small motor. I used a small davit to lift it to mount on the dink.

Hi Bob,
Its a 2 stroke 6 hp yamaha. It weighs about 50-60lbs i think. I already have the bracket but i would like to thru bolt it with some backing plates. I think i might drill a small hole in the side of the closet wall tonight a look in the space. If its open i will cut a larger hole (one that will fit a deck plate) and reach in to attach the mount. I am just concerned as to what can be behind the wall.

There should be nothing behind the aft wall of the port hanging locker. The wiring for the stern light (in my boat at least) is much lower. You can remove the port side panel from the port hanging locker or just cut a sizeable opening with the "magic saw" (Feintool). Access to the fuel tank pick up lines is through this panel.

I cut an access panel in the back of both hanging lockers to install my davit.

Thanks Greg,
I was hoping you would respond. I knew from your photos you had been inside this area of our boats.

Thanks again

I think the fuel fill hose is back there.

There is access on the hanging locker floor and on the upper port side of the locker. You should be able to reach around from the upper port side access. I'm too old for motor lifting so went this route:
