  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
32' FLYBRIDGE FISHERMAN (1983 - 1987)
Can anyone confirm the proper transmission for a 32 Hatteras flybridge with 454s?

I was told 2:1 BW Velvet drive but it looks like that may be a colloquial description of the 1.91:1? Does that sound right?

Thanks!!

The only way to know for sure is to look at the tag on the unit.

Unfortunately it was repowered with donor transmissions with the wrong gear ratio, I was hoping there could be an owner on here who knew.

If you don't know what the boat had or what you have now, how do you know it's wrong?
This affects both engines?

Donor boat was a 1988 Formula 311 coming in under 8k pounds. Current transmission is a velvet drive with 1.5:1 ratio. With that engine/transmission combo it won’t go above 3400 rpm even after changing props. Mechanic has said it should be a velvet drive 2:1 but I am hoping for confirmation knowing people also call the 1.91:1 colloquially a 2:1.

From my cut sheet on 71 & 72 clutches;
Available Ratios …… 1.00, 1.52, 1.88*, 2.10, 2.57, 2.901 : 1.00
Shaft Rotation …… output same as engine unless noted by asterisk (*)

PM me your e-mail and I can send the whole cut sheet with some manuals I have.

I sent you what little I had. I hope in the notes you can find something to help figure what you have.
Remember, That 1.88 : 1 spins counter to the block.

You can get RPM with what you have, just reduce pitch.
I ran a boat with no reduction, Lots of diameter, not much pitch.

Thank you for the documentation! It will be helpful!

Rebuilding a Velvetdrive on my Roamer as we speak. Mine is behind a 330 HP 454 Mercruiser. Its a 72C model @ 2.57-1 reduction. The brass tag next to the dipstick will tell you all you need to know. The 10-18 part is a Big Block with one extra clutch disc. The small blocks run one less. Some gears you can reverse the rotation via the pump on the front, others are CW in and CCW out. Youtube this from a guy in Put In Bay Ohio. https://www.google.com/search?q=you...ate=ive&vld=cid:272a9840,vid:gsL89bB1tM8,st:0 z40.webp
