Where does one find out more on the installation of teak/holly decks? I would like to replace my 40 year old factory linoleum cabin floors with the afore mentioned material. Does one make it ones self? Can I buy it ready to install? Please help a blind man see the light.

Thanks Howard. Have you used their products? I filled out their form and await a return call. As a contractor I am really looking for a materials source. I have a feeling that their product my be bit too pricey for my budget. Bruce

We bought 1/2 marine grade teak/holly plywood from Harbor Sales in Sudlersville MD. They are a huge outfit www.harborsales.net. It was about $150 for a standard 4X8 sheet. They will ship them but I picked mine up, its only 25 miles from Skooch and Chestertown, MD. I needed two sheets.
See

world panel and sometimes local lumber yards have plywood with teak and holly veneer. it's s a good compromise and not too expensive.

Skooch, i love the look of your floor. How has the verneer ply held up? This is the type of product I had in mind. I am interested in the longevity issue. I have 3 young children who can raise h..l on the decks and anything else they put their feet on. Thank you Pascal and Seaeric also for the links now I am on the right track. Bruce

Bruce: I laid the teak and holly plywood veneer in the salon. galley and head in my 36C . I coated both sides with West epoxy befor laying it. I put on three coats of Ultimate Sole and after three years of hard use it looks great. One caution, the veneer is pretty thin so be very careful when doing any sanding. Good luck with your project. It comes in plywood veneer that is a glue-down to the plywood floor. Hatches have to be planed to attach the veneer and be able to close the hatch. A trim carpenter with boat experience is all you need. I just added some in my 43 and got rid of carpet.

Bob, do I understand correctly that you coated the finish surface with West system and then put the sealer on top of it? I wouldn't have imagined that the Ultimate Sole would adhere to the epoxy. Bruce

Bruce: I coated the finish side surface with the West and the applied the Ultimate Sole. No adheasion problem. I had a bad leak that went undetected for awhile in the galley and my floor had about an inch of water on it for over a couple of hours. Because the plywood was completely sealed I did not have any problems when it dried. Bob

Teak and Holly ply comes in 1/4, 3/8 ( in some places ) 1/2 and 3/4.......

It is like any other ply such as teak, afromosia, mahogany: there is a very thin veneer of the substrate.

I prefer using the 1/2 thickness. It will cover more imperfections that mat be hidding on the sub floor, is thick enough to screw and plug, and most importantly, is thick enough to trim the edges of both the floor cut out and the hatch.

Never, Ever put in a hatch without adding solid teak to the hatch and the floor opening. Have seen " good " carpenters do this. Then when the hatch is removed or re-inserted.....the veneer chips !

When the ply is being laid in area that is prone to water, I west system the bottom by mixing west epoxy and adding about 10% laquer thinner. This makes the ecpoxy more water like and it actually soaks into the ply very well.

The topside , be it in a head or other areas gets about 8-10 coats of satin polyuerathane. I am not a fan of using epoxy first, then varnishing. I prefer satin finish and the poly because a satin finish will show less scratches from everyday use and is very easy to apply touch up coats.

Thanks to all who offered their advice. I am now confident that I can proceed .Paul, I appreciate your tips. I was hoping to hear from you. Being a professional at this type of thing Your advise is greatly appreciated. Bruce

I like the look of the teak and holly but the veneer is very thin and the seams can be a challenge to get right. You might consider a pre engineered floor they are available in all plywood constuction and in teak as well. I even saw one in a "ship Deck" that was similiar to teak and hoolly. I do a staple and glue down instalation and because it a tongue and groove no fastenings are visable it's quick and easy and it's pre finished with a very durable urethane finish. So it's much less work and requires much less skill than the teak and holly.

Brian, do you have any brand names in mind?Where to buy? I am interested in the type of product you are refering to. Bruce

Pre engineered floors are available at home improvement stores like Home Depot or Lowes. Some are not made of plywood I would stay away from them but they usually have at least a few that are all wood. Harris Tarcket makes one that is 9/16" thick with a 1/16" veneer good stuff and Home Depot has it. For the less common woods like teak I would sugest an internet search or a large supplier. Here in Tampa The Laminate Store is a wharehouse sized place that sells nothing but flooring they have teak in stock. You might also consider investing in a 1/4" air stapler very handy for putting this stuff down. If you like send me PM with your email and I'll take some photos of the area I did. I used an oak veneer from Home Depot.

I did some searching yesterday and came up with this site:

http://www.plasteak.com/boating/flooring/flooring.htm

They have 2 interesting products to me, one is an imitation teak/holly for interiors called "lonseal" and the other is exterior called "plasdeck". Anyone have experience with either?

Also I was told that Hunter sailboats and some others use a teak/holly imitation that looks like the real thing. On their web-site it is called
"everwear". When I searced for that all I come up with is adds for boats.
Anyone know anything about this stuff?
Thanks,
Jeff
