All of our children and grandchildren are visiting Europe this spring break leaving us at loose ends. So, after traveling over 800 nmi last year in the Exumas Dudley and I decided to take it easy this year.
On Sunday, after one of the smoothest crossings I can remember, we pulled into the enormous harbor between mainland Eleuthera and Royal Island. At sunset, 6:10 pm, we were about 10 miles offshore when we finally observed the fabled Green Flash that I had been waiting for for over 40 years! Very green, and lasted 2-3 seconds which surprised me.
Too dark to try to enter Spanish Wells so anchored off Meek's Patch about 8:30. The next day was our 51st wedding anniversary so had a leisurely Champagne breakfast. Pulled into the marina a little after noon.
I have been stopping at the Spanish Wells Yacht Haven for at least 40 years. It is a beautifully sheltered harbor. But even this was decimated in 1992 when the eye of Hurricane Andrew passed directly over. The old marina was largely demolished and had provided only basic services until about three years ago when a complete renovation was begun. Everything is brand new! There are rooms and a villa, a nice Greek-themed restaurant and bar. The grounds are beautifully planted and maintained. The 30 slip docks are new and can handle 165 foot boats on the face dock, with 9 ft draft at low tide, shallower slips down to 4.5 ft at low. Finally the marina added RO water this year as the town water had become brackish. Showers and laundry on premises.
Spanish Wells is a primarily residential community. It has a unique system of co-ops, owned by the residents, comprising a very complete supermarket and the electrical generating plant. Several other small markets. It is the center of the spiny lobster fishery for the Bahamas. Freshly caught fish is usually available.
We plan to be here for about two months. We will probably go around the corner of Eleuthera to tourist-oriented Harbour Island for a couple days when guests come. But other than that we should be here and would love to encourage any of you to visit us.
Come see us!
