  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
50' MOTOR YACHT (1964 - 1968)
All of our children and grandchildren are visiting Europe this spring break leaving us at loose ends. So, after traveling over 800 nmi last year in the Exumas Dudley and I decided to take it easy this year.

On Sunday, after one of the smoothest crossings I can remember, we pulled into the enormous harbor between mainland Eleuthera and Royal Island. At sunset, 6:10 pm, we were about 10 miles offshore when we finally observed the fabled Green Flash that I had been waiting for for over 40 years! Very green, and lasted 2-3 seconds which surprised me.

Too dark to try to enter Spanish Wells so anchored off Meek's Patch about 8:30. The next day was our 51st wedding anniversary so had a leisurely Champagne breakfast. Pulled into the marina a little after noon.

I have been stopping at the Spanish Wells Yacht Haven for at least 40 years. It is a beautifully sheltered harbor. But even this was decimated in 1992 when the eye of Hurricane Andrew passed directly over. The old marina was largely demolished and had provided only basic services until about three years ago when a complete renovation was begun. Everything is brand new! There are rooms and a villa, a nice Greek-themed restaurant and bar. The grounds are beautifully planted and maintained. The 30 slip docks are new and can handle 165 foot boats on the face dock, with 9 ft draft at low tide, shallower slips down to 4.5 ft at low. Finally the marina added RO water this year as the town water had become brackish. Showers and laundry on premises.

Spanish Wells is a primarily residential community. It has a unique system of co-ops, owned by the residents, comprising a very complete supermarket and the electrical generating plant. Several other small markets. It is the center of the spiny lobster fishery for the Bahamas. Freshly caught fish is usually available.

We plan to be here for about two months. We will probably go around the corner of Eleuthera to tourist-oriented Harbour Island for a couple days when guests come. But other than that we should be here and would love to encourage any of you to visit us.

Come see us!

Good info... we just got back from the exumas this morning ... the stream was good but yesterday afternoon the NW channel was... well ... the NW Chanel with southerly 3 footers and a NE swell giving the stabs a good work out!

Spanish wells is a nice little settlement. There are some nice side trips to do along the shoreline of Eleuthera too, past current cut. I m not a big fan of Harbor island, it's a pretty little village but too touristic

Have fun! We re heading back out to the berrys and Exuma in a couple of weeks.

Jim I guess you are not held back by the bridge any longer. We saw that SW was heading in a good direction the last time we were there in April of '14. It's good to hear they have turned the corner.

We stayed in Spanish Wells Yacht Haven Marina for a few days back in 2003. I remember it being quite run down. I am glad to hear they have bounced back.

We loved Spanish Wells.

Agree...Harbour Island was touristy.

I loved the green flash. I was able to see it a few tides in the early 80's.

At first I thought it was a snipe Hunt.

My bad it was private. Should be good to go now that I made it public.

I've seen the green flash in Barbados. Some days it's more vivid than others.

Glad to hear you made it safely.
