They call this stuff sanitation hose? It's JUNK - at least in a standard sanitation system. Maybe it's OK for a vacuflush though I don't know what difference that would make.

I redid the the waste hoses with this stuff last year. NOT because there was a problem but it just seemed like good PM. I commented in a thread about the chlorine that the hoses in the eng room were ruined by the chlorine fumes. So I wasn't concerned by the porosity (poop) smell coming through those hoses, figuring it was caused by the affect of the fumes.

HOWEVER, this morning I was in the genny room where I had done the same hose replacement last year. The hose smelled of poop - though not as strongly as the ones in the eng room. There was never any chorine odor in the genny room and no real way for the fumes to find there way there.

Here's the thing that really annoys me...the original hoses, which were just the black engine-type water hoses...never had a sewage odor at all. There are still a couple of them in place and no odor. The galley maid waste treatement system was connected originally by the standard braided water hose. Also no odor...

A few days ago I installed new XHD to replace the stuff in the eng room that was damaged by the chlorine but it's now obvious to me that it's just crappy(!) hose and now I have to rip it out and put the type of hose that Hatteras originally installed.

GRRR.... :(

Mike, did ths hose recieve that high dose of chlorine from pool chemicals?

No, this head is on a different system from the other two and the hose just ran waste from the GM pump to the lectraSan. THe other two heads use GM waste treatement systems and those hoses DID have the chlorine mix from the Tri-Chlor tablets running through them.

Mike,
My boat had the Shieldflex Premium sanitation hose on it with the green stripe. I replaced with the same and have had no problems.

That's different hose than the XHD I bought. Whatever XHD is good for, I can't imagine...

Found this info which I found extremely interesting - indicates to me that the white hose should not be used in the eng/genny room at all...

"Sewage allowed to sit in the hose develops acids and gas that shorten its odor-free life. This is especially the case with white vinyl extra heavy-duty sanitation hose (see Illustration 1, below), where petroleum-based lubricants, excessive heat softening, and fluids containing alcohol, petrochemicals, or solvents can damage the hose and shorten its "odor-free" life"

Everything that they say is bad for the white hose is in an engine/genny room. Further, I can't imagine any installation that is totally self draining so there will always be some sewage "sitting" in a hose somewhere unless it were to run vertically and dump outside. The Hatt has a lot of horzontal runs of some length, several in the eng/genny space.

That stuff is junk and has always, in my experience, stunk. FWIW.

You guys must like doing things over and over. The white hose sucks! the only place to use it is on a Vacuflush wher there is vacuum.

I have told you guys over and over to use the industrial air and water hose available at any commercial hose supplier like Amazon or Goodyear or any Parker store. Heavy wall rubber no wire and 200 or 300 psi rating. Stays soft and seals well on fittings and in 30 years of using the stuff have never had any permeation. I don't know how many Hatt MY's I have replaced all the rotted wire reinforced hoses for HEADS, AIR COND etc. with this stuff.

Never ever a problem. Warning it does not say MARINE on it no ABYC, FBI,CIA Passagemaker, West marine, PMY, CE, NAMS,SAMS, POTUS on it............................... But it works and lasts and lasts.
Bertram and Chris Craft have used it since the 60,s. YMMV

I remember seeing a ShipShape TV program about sanitation hoses and I think I remember something about a hose with some type of gel material that is laminated between the inner and outer layer. Supose to prevent smell.

"You guys must like doing things over and over."

No, I HATE doing things over but this stuff is sold as sanitation hose and with a 3 year guarantee (lasted less than one). The "sanitation" hose that was on our boat was Buckeye Bellowsflex and after who knows how many years (can't imagine it was the original 1980's hose but was at least 10 years old) it didn't smell or leak. As I said, I replaced it as PM; I should have left it alone.

I'll do as you suggest...can you give me a specific hose number/brand? There are tons of air/water hose. Are you saying any of them are fine?

This is the stuff available in Black or Red. Install and forget it.

I bet Dave has had it tested. Look at the can from the beans.

I may need to change a few pieces too. Thanks for the info Dave.

Actually I despise baked beans. Someone gave me the can full of parts.

Dave, is that similar to heater hose?

As I noted, the original 1" ID hose that I replaced in my effort to do good preventive maint (and which had no odor/leaks) was this stuff - also NOT shown as "sanitation hose." http://www.goodyearrubberproducts.c...trialHose/ThermoidIndustrialHose1.Page042.asp

THis, coupled with Cptddis info indicates to me that the whole marine industry's "you have to use "sanitation hose to prevent odor" is a load of cr@p! ;)

There are places where marine rated is needed. But most " marine hose" is nothing more than overpriced industrial hose. I hate the wire reinforced hose as it has a short lifespan, I use non wire except where absolutely needed.

When I see something that does not holdup, I look for an alternative and when I find it I use it regardless of what the judges say.

Hose is needed where you can't get easy access but PVC pipe is even better if you can get it in there.

True for sanitation, AC is a different story. Barnacles love the white PVC and don't grow as much in the black hose. At least in salt water.
