  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
Lilly Marie has a new dock which is a little further from home and no longer under the watchful eye of my mother in law and her sitters.
The dock is now about 2 miles from home, in a good neighborhood; however, thanks to Katrina damage the dock is on an empty lot, the nearest neighbors are about 250 feet away, and burglary is a concern.
I've reviewed the DIY security systems from "Simplisafe" and Fortress, and it looks like they would work. I don't have, but can purchase internet access if needed.
I would appreciate any recommendations on a good alarm system, whether DIY or through a service.
Thanks

I recently went to SimpliSafe for home security. Very pleased so far. No internet connection needed. It works on a cellular comm network. Cost is a fraction of the previous monitoring + phone line expense. I think it would be great on a boat as it should work anywhere. Not sure of their rules on that if the location changes.

I also put simplisafe on my 53. Took ten minutes to install. I added another exterior siren so my neighbors would be alerted in case of a break in. This is the only system I found you could use and not be hooked to a monthly fee. I needed it for just the alarm system. It works great. Highly recommend this one.

Thanks for the information.
I will give Simplisafe a try.
Regards,

I'm using the Arlo camera, which operates through the wifi connection on the boat, which I already had anyway.

i think the simplisafe system is the best deal. Cellular and not dependent on a wifi system that can go down. I have it backed up with Pilot guardcam cameras that are wifi based but no monthly fee and I can access them from anywhere I have Internet. I have those cameras on the boat also and while I was stuck in Pa during the recent blizzard saw the water rising in the bilge on the boat. I have a secondary fail safe back up float swich 6" above the primary and the water was up to it. Called my daughter and she found the primary swich bad and the deck drains in the back hatches plugged with dirt from the monsoon rains they've been having. Great pease of mind to be able to look at the cameras several times a day when I'm away.

SimpliSafe sounds like a great security system for the boat or home! I am currently using Amcrest Wifi cameras in the house and boat. They plug into a 110v outlet and use Wifi to broadcast. The neat part about them is they zoom, rotate left or right and up and down all from your smart phone, pad or laptop. You can view them from anywhere that has wifi. Very nice, easy to set up and only $115 each.

Forgot to ad that they also have night vision!! I can see the entire great room of the house in complete darkness!

I've installed the basic simpisafe system, very easy. An opening sensor on each wing door and a motion sensor on the aft deck, key pad by the helm, and I plugged the base station inside the main cabin. Looks like all you need for a boat. Total equipment cost $200. However monitoring cost $25 per month to have it interact with my cell phone.

Purchasing a used big boat has prepared me for the concept of low purchase price and higher cost of maintenance.
