Please let me know what you think about Perkins Range 4 diesels (240 hp) - good or not so good.

There seems to be only a few Perkins sales/repair centers. I live in south Louisiana and the closest authorized repair shop is in Florida.

I have always liked Cummins and CAT, but I like this boat that has the Perkins diesels.

The engines are ok and last a long time. Some parts are a little scarce.

Perkins are used extensively in industrial equipment and generators on land. I'm not sure if Perkins marinized the engines themselves or not....just check on the marine parts availability, as said.

I'd take Perkins over 2strokes anyday, but that's just me.

I have 2 250hp Perkins in a 53 SF love them start every time you hit the starter.Im burning 5 Gal an hour at 9kts there used in Masey Ferguson tractors the last one I over hauled used tractor parts in a kit that included al parts to over haul long block including new valves and springs for head for $1300 dollars .

250 hp a side is barely enough to dock a 53.

A 53 convertibe with qsm 11s would be a better choice.

Then again if your not fishing it you don't need to get up and go.

It will run 16mph try docking at that speed.

I think I have a few times. But that's anot her story.

Cat uses Perkins 6-354 in several machines, the 930 rubber tire loader for example, and other Perkins engines in skid steers, small excavators and dozers and track loaders.

I like the 6-354, and I guess Cat did also.

They liked it so much they bought the company.

Yep been owned by Cat for a while now. There is lots of history to goggle about Perkins.Im running original shafts 2.5 and 30x30 props with 3.75 to 1 gears and the motors sound happy.

Thanks for all the answers. I appreciate the help.

In the 90's Perkins had a marketing agreement with Detroit Diesel. Befor the Asian engines were so popular the Perkins engines propelled most diesel rag boats, many Kohler gensets, many Case JBC, Massey, tractors. A quality product on their own, even the V8.
