Hatteras Model
28' SPORT FISHERMAN (1965 - 1966)
Since acquiring my 1966 28" Hatteras SF project boat, I've learned that not very many of the 28'ers were made, 30 some SportFish and 60 some cruisers per the factory. I would like to track down as many as I can for the purpose of exchanging tips, stories, part sources, yada, yada, yada. Maybe someone has a dining table that someone else could use, stuff like that. Sort of a sub-set of this forum with kindred spirit comraderie being the goal. I've uncovered thirteen of them off the web so far but have talked/e-mail contacted only five. If any of you know of a Baby Hatt, would you please pass me that Hatt so that I may try to make contact. I have found three Hatt 28's listed with tight-lipped not very helpful brokers. If anyone knows or is the buyer or seller, please get in touch. My e-mail is hobo@freenet.macatawa.org and my phone number is (616) 335-6837. Btw, has anyone seen or heard from Capt Ed Cairns of the 28' fleet? I've been trying to contact him to no avail. Thank you in advance for any reply. Here's to Hatts! Hi Howard,

According to classic Hatts his email is captainedc@msn.com - have you tried contacting him that way?

Otherwise, I have a phone number if that helps. Give me a holler by PM or by email - I wrote you at your own email address so all you need to do is reply.

Best,

Rich

Thanks for the get-back, Rich. Kind of funny, how things can change. Since my original post, I've found more Hatt 28's (total of 29 now!) and I've had to change my ISP due the old one changing my e-mail address twice without telling me! As if dealing with dial-up wasn't annoying enough. My new e-mail address is hobo@wmol.com. Side-bar: Can the forum moderators make the change at this site or should I contact them seperately? Back to Hatts - I guess the point is Capt Cairns may have switched ISP's also. I'll PM you this afternoon for the phone number.

Regarding the Baby Hatts, when I was in Kent Island, MD, picking up my Baby Hatt, I meet a Chris owner who was a local. I told him why I was in town and he told me he had a 1966 magazine article with a test of the "new" 28' cruiser. He brought me a copy after he went home for lunch. Pretty interesting, with direct quotes about the boat from both Willis Slane and J. B. Hargrave. It also announces a new SportFish model, to be priced at $14,950.00. I'll try to get the article posted at the Classic Hatt website. In the meantime, if anyone is interested, I can maybe e-mail or certainly snail-mail them a copy.

If any of you fine citizens know the where-abouts of a Hatt 28', please, PLEASE, PLEASE let me know. It's for fun and comraderie, not profit or annoyance. I have seen the 28' cruiser for sale here and tried to contact him twice but have not had any response. Oh, well.

Thanks for taking the time. Here's to Hatts! Howard, on Michigan's West and Best Coast

Did you get in touch with Doug with Tonkas Toy if not I can help with that one.
Good luck with your new Boat Dan.

I know of a 28 Sportfish in Bree Zee Lee marina in Cape May, NJ, but I can't remember the name. I'll check next time I'm in the area.

I've had several nice conversations with Doug. Truth be told, "Tonka's Toy" was a factor when I bought my boat. I think she is one fine looking Hatt. BTW, I've followed your re-power with interest. Sure looks like you did a terrific job! Like your website also!

Thank you, Fred R., for the info. Tracking down those Baby Hatt's is a fun diversion when I'm not able to throw time or money at my project! Which is most of the time, now that I think about it. Howard in West Michigan

Hello, I am a newbie. We bought a '66 Hatt 28' cruiser in october of '06. We can't wait to get it in the water this year. Bix

I'll try to get the article posted at the Classic Hatt website.
