  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
61' MOTOR YACHT (1980 - 1985)
Looking for guidance on how to oil afromosia wood finish in 1985. 61 MY saloon, galley and cabins. We have washed down all surfaces. What oil would be best? Any technique? This has not been done for a long time. Some wood is well bleached and dry. Surfaces do not appear to be varnished. Thanks.

In the paperwork from Hatteras on my 1987 40 double cabin, they used Watco teak oil. I have done the whole interior. The lighter sections have darkened and match the rest of the wood. Just follow the directions on the can.

Is your wood raw or does it have varnish on it? If varnished oils only sit on the surface and give it a nice look but do nothing for the wood itself because it's sealed. A good bees wax cleaner is what I used. You would be suprised Judy how much dirt collects in the grain.

Where I built some new things, a few coats of tung oil gave my raw teak plywood a finish that looks and feels like satin varnish. It also freshened up the original teak walls that had the factory-applied oil finish.

Just, not Judy. Type-O sorry

There is an excellent post years ago from the other bobk with a separation in the name. Look up posts from 'bob k' to find it and it will provide lots of good ideas. Personally, I use Watco teak oil. I also clean with rubbing alcohol to get all hand oils and other stuff off first. The alcohol will turn the surface whitish, but after one coat it returns to the typical color.
