Oil filter adapter for spin on oil filter 871-ti

Hi, When I removed the oil filter the adapter came off with the filter. Has anyone had experience with re installing the adapter, seems straight foreword but want to make sure I get the gasket in right next to the housing and should I use lock tight on the threads going into the housing. It had a star lock with tabs to bend down to hold it but these might not line up When I tighten it to lock it. Thanks, Steve
