New canvas enclosure cost

I just got an estimate on enclosing the aft deck of my 1989 40DC. The flybridge is already enclosed and we have a top on the aft deck. The quote was $12,500 plus tax for a sunbrella enclosure with 40mm strataglass with rolldown windows with screens. Wanted to know if that sounded at least in the ballpark of reasonable.

Sounds very high to me... I'm in central NJ and last year I had a complete bridge enclosure including
a bimini top and all four sides using strataglas 40 ga and it cost me $6,000. BTW it was a great job.
The boat was a 1982 48' Series 1 MY.

Look into using Markalon or EZ2CY instead of strata glass or Eisenglass. It will cost a little more but is much clearer with no rippling. Only down side is it can’t be rolled, you have to hook it up to the overhead when open. John

That seem extremely high. Should be in the $5,000-6,000 range. Ask boater friends for recommendations on canvass makers and get multiple quotes in writing from two or three.

I just had my flybridge curtains replaced with 40mm Strataglass. We reused the old canvas and just replaced the glass. Cost me $2,000 and I had to take them to the shop. I am going to have to have some of the zippers replaced. I would recommend doing that while they are at it if you are re-using old ones.

When you say that you have a top on your aft deck are you talking about a hard top or a soft (fabric) top? Also, is there weather board around the aft deck or just railing?

I am just starting out in the canvas world here in SC but I can tell you that a sheet of 40 ga Strattaglass with no tint runs about $185 for a 54"x 110" sheet. Sunbrella runs roughly around $15-$20 per linear yd. for 60" material. Then you have to account for all the zippers, fasteners, binding, facing and so on. It sounds to me that the quote you got was pretty far out there. I know for me to enclose the rear of my 44 Triple Cabin its going to cost me roughly $1800 in materials alone which for most canvas shops would come out to roughly $3600 give or take. Labor generally works out to close to half the total cost of a job.

It is actually a flat soft top covering the entire aft deck. Probably 71/2 ft in height above the deck. There is a 1.5-2ft strip of hard material (?fiberglass) around the side rail. I had wanted him to enclose down to the deck so as to keep it more weather and bug proof with the ability to open the strataglass to screens in the summer. I replied to him that 12,500 was more than I wanted to spend and when he asked what range I was thinking I replied that I had been educated that perhaps half of his estimate was more appropriate. He just replied back that only a less quality soft siding without screens could be done for that price.

Not true. Going into winter these guys will need work. I went top of the line with all materials and it was 6500.00. And that was high at that when compared to other shops. Keep getting estimates until they reach your needs.

It's always a crap shoot when you dont have a full description of the project.

I'd suggest comparing the whole job to another that's similar if not identical . When you get all the details you may find its not worth the price quoted or you may see why it cost more than you thought.

Just like a rebuild on a motor. It's all about what's included and what's not.

I have contacted another canvas place which is in Chattanooga - about 1 hour away. Haven’t heard back from them yet but hopefully can get a second quote to compare. If not I am ok waiting. I can tell you that adding screens is actually not very much cost at all really as far as materials go. Labor wise there may be a few hours there but still not much added when you're already doing zippered windows. I will tell you that he is wrong about quality because I use nothing but top quality products such as Sunbrella fabrics and Tenara thread and so on.

He laser shoots the area to be covered, coverts the data and cuts the material with a CNC cutter and sews it up. Quality, guaranteed work at a very reasonable price. I agree that quote is WAY out of line, but come on up! I’m sure I can hook you up with someone who can do a nice job for a lot less.

Randy, what would be your recommendation for a marina for us near you? We like Goose Pond but might be more going on near Knoxville
