I just saw the news segment on the boat show which is at a new location this year and suffering its share of growing pains. Traffic to/from/on the island is an utter nightmare, taking most people way more than an hour just to get to Virginia Key. Take the free water taxis, for sure, even if you have to travel further to get to a water taxi pick up location. The bus shuttles will leave you sitting in the traffic. The bay is wide open for water taxis.

Free Water Taxi - pickup and drop off points include:

American Airlines Arena

Intercontinental/Bayfront Park, Downtown (Strictly Sail Miami pickup/drop-off point)

Dinner Key Marina, Coconut Grove (no vehicle parking available) – hub for Sonesta Beach Hotel and all Coconut Grove hotels

Hyatt Regency Miami, Downtown – also services Epic and JW Marriott Marquis

Miami Marriott, Biscayne Bay – also serves the Hilton Downtown and Omni Hotel

Viceroy Hotel, Brickell – hub for all Brickell area hotels

Purdy Boat Ramp, Miami Beach 18th St. & Purdy Ave (no vehicle parking available) – hub for Miami Beach hotels (Thursday-Monday only)

There is a map here where you can see where some of these places are if you're not familiar with the Miami area: http://www.miamiboatshow.com/public-transportation

Did that. It was still a disaster. close to two hours trying to get off Virginia Key.

The water taxi ride Must have been fun yesterday from the grove with 20kts wind on the bay in a big pontoon boat.

There may not have been much of the wait to take the parking less grove water taxi but from what I have hear all the others had long lines. On average people spent an hour or more, between their cars and the show. Each way.

And the few who were lucky to get parking passes on Virgina key had to endure an hour long bus ride in traffic to mainland and back because the buses couldnt not make a left on the causeway to go straight to the parking lot.

It's a great location for the show but didn't seem well planned. Welcome to the banana republic of Miami
