This is how Wal-Mart gets all its stuff from China . Get a load of this ship!

15,000 containers and a 207' beam!
And look at the crew-size for a ship? longer than a US aircraft carrier which has a complement of 5,000 men and officers.
Think it's big enough?

Notice that 207' beam means it was NOT designed for the Panama or Suez Canal.
It is strictly transpacific.

Check out the cruise speed: 31 knots means the goods arrive 4 days before the typical?
container ship (18-20 knots) on a China-to-California run.
So this behemoth is hugely competitive carrying perishable goods.

This ship was built in three, or perhaps as many as five sections.
The sections floated together and then were welded.
The ship is named Emma Maersk.
The command bridge is higher than a 10-story building and has 11 crane rigs that can operate simultaneously.

When you get that thing goin' at 31kts, imagine just how long (miles) it takes to stop it if something were to be in its way.....

Aslo, in the 2nd picture, notice the volume of water being pumped overboard out of the port side...

UH, oK, the cruise speed - I couldn't believe - so I did little of my on research.. from wikipedia, I am getting a little different story on beam and max speed: The Speed is 25 knots, and bean is 183'

Can you believe that it has only 1 main engine, and 5 cats to support other manuevers?

Engine and the environment

The Emma Mærsk is powered by a Wärtsilä-Sulzer 14RTFLEX96-C engine, currently the world's largest single diesel unit, weighing 2,300 tons and capable of 109,000 horsepower (82 MW). The ship has several features to protect the environment. This includes recycling the exhaust, mixed with fresh air, back into the engine for reuse. This not only increases efficiency by as much as 12% but also reduces engine emissions.[3] Instead of biocides, used by much of the industry to keep barnacles off of the hull, a special silicone-based paint is used.[3] This increases the ship's efficiency by reducing drag while also protecting the ocean from biocides that may leak. The silicone paint covering the part of the hull below the waterline is credited for lowering the water drag enough to save 1200 tons of fuel per year.

It looks like they are de-ballisting for port. Theres an azimuthing tug standing by and its "light boat". If I'm not mistaken, that guys only got forward and no reverse with a fixed blade prop. One speed.... fast! ws
 
My guess would be all that water being pumped over is ballast tanks being emptied. Could be getting ready to enter port and take on cargo, etc... Could also be that ballast water often must be discharged offshore before entering certain ports i.e. zebra mussels, etc...
 
Oh...so it's not the dripping stuffing boxes?
 
I'm with you MikeP, that has stuffing box written all over it. Or maybe the AC's, one of the two. That ballast talk is just silly. I tell yall one thing, I'd sh*t my pants if i was cruising @ 15 kts in the 90 with that monster bearing down on me!!!!

Who's surprised it has one engine? Almost all cargo ships have one BIG engine. And guess what, most of them don't have any reduction gear or transmission/clutch of any sort. Engine is hooked directly to the shaft and to go in reverse, the engine is run in reverse.

Bill, you beat me....looks like de-ballasting to me.
 
I thought these boats had controllable-pitch propellers, so in order to go in reverse, they turn the blades around the other way...

I was going to say the food is better on the QM2, and the combat armaments are better on the Enterprise, but I have heard that Maersk Lines food is actually VERY good.

Most freighters don't have variable pitch propellers because they are designed to run at one speed and use tugs in port. KISS, they need to make money!
 
The way things are headed private mega yachts (diesel powered) will be that big! :)

Now if we can just get Wal-Mart to increase the size of it's parking lots!
