On my 1968 Chris Craft Commander 42 knock-about boat, the OEM Cruisair 3-knob control panel in the salon was getting seriously hot recently. I assumed it had something to do with the fact that this split system is 50 years old. The [what appeared to be] original water-cooled March 510gph water pump has been periodically making a bit of bearing/bushing noise. It still seemed to pump water fine, but the noise was a concern. And when I put a no-touch thermometer to the pump motor, it indicated 135°F. That seemed hot.
Since I had a guest coming for six weeks, I decided to buy a reportedly good used March LC-3CP-MD. That liquid cooled unit lasted 24 hours before locking up. By which, I mean I could spin the magnet by hand, but it would lock up once power was applied to the motor.
So I returned it and talked to Steve at Flagship Marine, who recommended considering going with the air-cooled version of that pump. New, it's 40% less than the liquid-cooled version and, he claimed, it's used all around the globe without incident for years.
So I bought one. Even on hot summer days it runs at 108°F in the same space as the old liquid-cooled version. I think I'm sold.
