  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
52' CONVERTIBLE (1983 - 1990)
My yard is taking our bottom down to the original, we are removing all the old coats of bottom paint. They are telling me that we need two coats of the InterProtect 2000 but the interlux site says recommended coats is four. Has anyone had any experience with this? We will be putting two or three coats of Micron 66 bottom paint over this.

Thanks
Brooks

We have 2 coats which is what our yard recommended also and in reading the specifications it's the thickness that is important. Ours was done this spring so too early to tell how good it will work. We put CSC over it and fixed ALL the blisters prior to 2000E. I will report back this winter.

I have been told it will not totally stop blisters but will cut them waaaaaayyy down.(6-8 vs 40-50)

It's all in the thickness. 2 coats is thin. The more the better the protection. It also has to be done correctly to bond and become one solid mass.

I have used west system with their additive too and they also say so many mils for protection.

I would suggest you track how much is applied not how many coats. Thinner is often needed in warm weather so take that into account.

As to completely stopping blisters. If applied correctly to a dry bottom with no other issues there will be no blisters.

Thanks a bunch

2000 goes on at 7 mils wet and dries to 3 mils . Pettit protect goes on 7 mils and dries to 4 mils. both have mica flakes to inhibit moisture transfer through the epoxy .you need 10-12 mils dry film thickness for adequate barrier system, otherwise its simply a primer adhesion promoter.

If you have had a history of blisters , its senseless not to put the minimum 10-12 mils since you have spent the money to remove/blast the old paint off and have osmotic protection

I agree with both above. You want the specified thickness that the manufacturer states. You've already done most of the work.
