  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
46' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1974 - 1981)
Has anybody bought an icemaker lately that they really liked? Ours in the wet bar on our 46c is finally dying. A 22lb a day isotherm ss unit is about 1500. I don't care to spend the money on something that will work well and for a while. I'm just trying to avoid some of the new stuff that you have to replace every couple years.

Have had pretty good luck with the Raritan ice makers, have 10-12 year old one in our beach house and a similar vintage unit in our office.
So, 5-1/2 years ago our 15 year old washing machine quit, dryer was fine in our home. Wife had to have "matching" units so no sense fighting battles that can't be won. Delivery guy asks if either of the units were working, told him the dryer is good. His response was "you're not getting 15 years out of this new unit". He was right , 6 months after the 5 year warranty ended so did the dryer's life. Appliances are just junk these days.

Best ice maker I ve ever used is the 15” Scotsman. But they’re not cheap…

I m done with Uline… expensive yet cheaply built. Over the years I ve had to deal
With many ice makers and fridges on boats I ve run

If it is inside or in a protected area outside like an aft deck you could use the cheaper ones like this one… made of chineseum. I have used similar knockoff fridges before and they be been pretty good.

Our boat has had three Scotsman ice makers over the past 40 years . Unfortunately , the last one lasted about 2 months before failing . Warranty is covering the problem , but I had to remove it myself ,which I would rather do . A lot of details don't look good compared to the machines prior . I get the feeling that our country is falling apart . Especially , since all they had to do was copy the prior years models .

Vitrifrigo has worked well for us. Installed a new one this year. Fast too

Yes, those countertop ones they sell at Walmart, where you can pour bottled waster into them. As a ex boat dealer, I was always having to buy customers new ones to close the deals. No problem when they were plentiful and four hundred bucks, but around 2010 they became hard to find locally in Miami Fort /Lauderdale, requiring me to drive as far as Melbourne to find one in inventory, only to discover parts were missing when opening the box, and the prices were $1200.00 dealer cost! I remember large brand new flybridge freezers with icemakers having rusty doors in the box! Then you’re still drinking water is still of dubious quality from your ships water tanks. Walmart -forty five bucks. Take it home or to your motorhomes when leaving the boat.

This won't be much help. I just returned from Sicily where our rented house had one of these countertop ice makers. I had briefly looked into these a few months ago and this one looked just like the picture of one I had explored but did not buy. In Sicily they run on 240 volts. Despite this it made small amounts of melty ice. There was no insulation in the ice receptacle, indoor temp was about 85, it never made enough ice to fill the tray which might have improved the yield. I rated it as unsatisfactory. Still, for $45 might be worth a try. Also, could be a different model.

My current U-Line makes great hard ice for my martini. Other than having to defrost it every six weeks or so it is fine.

I just replaced my Frigidaire washer dryer after 43 years. The unitedwas stamped “Tested 7/81” and the dryer was still working. I doubt the new oneswill get much more than 5 years.

The countertop ice makers work pretty well inside with AC, outside the ice melts too quickly

We have a nugget ice counter top as some people like that type of ice. It works well.

Off topic for the thread overall but buy speed queen next time. Same commercial guts as the laundermat coin op machines but a fancy top and buttons for home use. I would never buy any other washer or dryer and I buy a good amount. Plus made in USA

Speed Queen is definitely the best washser/dryer and I have them in my home but the stackable version they offer is almost 27" wide. Miele and GE offer a 23.4" wide stackable that are an easier fit.

Did you take it back to the Walmart there in Sicily for a refund? You have a year.

Yep, we have countertop icemaker #2 on the countertop in the galley now. But it makes some little ice cubes that melt pretty quick. And it takes a lot of counter space. I believe we'll drop the dime on a new 15" machine when it goes.

When Lilly Marie’s ice maker went out I looked into buying a replacement, then considered the water source. Good tasting ice is important for drinks and the ice maker at home makes great ice.
I found a small 2 cf chest freezer that fits in the place where the old ice maker was. I bring ice from home in 1 gallon zip lock bags and keep them in the little freezer. This system has served us well for over 10 years.

Welcome to the disposable age. Everyone talks about conservation and recycling but they want cheap and don't really care if they fill up the landfill with this crap. So they don't buy the well built stuff because it costs too much and without demand, that stuff is no longer made. Its the Walmart Affect.

Planned Obsolescence did that with the expensive stuff. Walmart is he solution, not the cause.

What's wrong with the ice maker? As long as you are not looking to put something different in and it still freezes ok, replacing the ice maker mechanism is no big deal. The technology hasn't changed since the 60's and an exact drop in replacement is less than $100. It's easy to do, it's 3 screws IIRC and a plug-in power connector.

One of these chicom brands with a name made up of randomly chosen letters. :). At that price you could go thru ten of them for a price of a Scotsman…

I had an ad pop up for Grainger advertising a $3350 Manitowoc ice maker…. Grainger always shows the country of origin… yep: Manitowocs are now made in china!

Disgusting. $3350 for an ice maker made out of chineseum.
