  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
48' COCKPIT MY-Series I (1981 - 1983)
I had a leak on my helm pump, the system has been filled with transmission fluid. I want to refill system with the mil-0-5606 fluid. the system will be flushed and refilled. Does anyone know if this is likely to cause leaks in the system.

Can't imagine it would cause a new leak.

Transmission fluid is 20w and so is power steering so at least from the viscosity standpoint its close. Its probably good they put ATF in instead of motor oil! :)

Who in the heck put transmission fluid in there. Damn, fire them.

Bin doing that for years.

ATF 5606 is the correct specification for you hynautic steering system

There was a thread about this a couple of months ago. Someone made the comment that by changing to the recommended fluid their fly bridge helm loosened up and was easier to turn than with ATF. Can anyone confirm that. John

In cooler weather it will make a difference.

The earlier manuals recommended Type A transmission fluid as an option. Whatever that is...

This is what is recommended

ATF is usually acceptable, that s mentioned in Hynautic manuals although it can be stiffer. Ive used it, no issues but if possible id rather stick to the real thing
