Does anyone have an idea why the hour meter on my port engine keeps running, even though the engine has been turned off and the ignition switch is off?
I was doing something in the engine room today and heard this ticking and traced it to the hour meter which was running. So, it must have been running for the last couple of weeks because it's now showing over 2900 hrs on it and I know when we did the survey earlier it only had 2400 hrs on it.

My meter runs off the fuel pressure switch located at the engine fuel filter. If it is stuck, current will continue to run meter. Good luck. P

Found them on Sam’s. Not sure if they still carry them but their in the catalog under knobs.

Had something similar happen on our 1987 45C. Hour meters were showing astronomical numbers. Found one was just always running and the other one was unplugged. Tested the fuel pressure sensors on both motors and both worked fine. We don't have the wiring diagrams for the boat and thought tracing the problem would be too time consuming, so we ran new wires from each pressure sensor to two new hour meters and now they're working perfect. Still curious why they were always running, but glad we have working meters now.

Let us know if you find the problem.

Good luck!

On a few Hatts we have worked on, the fuel pressure switch is in a poor location and always getting bumped. Could be the wire leads have been bumped together. Pull back the plastic/rubber cover and check. You can also disconnect here if needed.

Like everything else on our old boats the Hobbs hour meters will or have already failed and been replaced. Just as in navigation it is unwise to depend on any single marker to decide anything regarding the condition of a prospective vessel.

Sorry I put this on the wrong post.

Looks like that is exactly what happened. Two of the leads were touching. They must have gotten bumped together when I changed the filter. I separated them and the hour meter stopped recording.

Thank you very much.

I would document this in your records including date of this thread and title. Not that it would matter that much as engines are evaluated on condition but it would be good to explain the hours difference.
