  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
36' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1969 -1977)
I just purchased a 1969 36 and cracked the port sliding window while trying to jimmy it open. Any tricks or ideas on how to replace it would be very much appreciated. THANKS!!

First remove the stop block at the top of the track. Slide both glass panes to the center. Then lift up on the outside pane. It should slide up and tilt out at the bottom. If you don't have enough clearance to get it out, then the frame has settled due to the weight over the top of it over the years. In this case you will need a bottle jack and a couple of boards to jack the frame up. Once you get the glass out, you can have the new pane cut just a little bit shorter so that it goes back in without jacking. You will also want to pull out the fuzzies and the plastic sliders and replace them while you are in there. The fuzzies and plastic strip can be purchased from Sams Marine. The original glass is laminated glass with a Solex tint and you can get that at any glass shop.

If you search this site you will see several threads on this topic.

Sky is correct and thorough. The only thing I would add is to use a good sized putty knife on the inside of the tracks. Sometimes those very old fuzzies keep the window from moving. After you remove that wooden block, take your putty knife and vertically insert it between the window glass and the old fuzzies. Now move it back and forth until your window is free. Don't forget to duplicate that wood block in "Starboard" and throw the wood one away. That thing holds moisture and has been a great source of corrosion of window frames. Sam's has the new fuzzie material and new nylon track liners that the lower part of the glass slides on. Those get whacked into their tracks with a mallet and a piece of 1/2" plywood. Lay the new slider in the groove, put the 3" hunk of plywood on the slide and whack the plywood to click the new sliders into the window frame track. Do this operation before you slide the new fuzzies in. I did ours 5 years ago and they still work great.:)

I have to replace a window as well...the window next to the door on my 32. I think it was tapped when we craned the engines in and the small crack seems to have gotten worse from the heating and cooling of the air in the cabin. Anyhow...all of this glass is just laminate glass? Nothing special? I want to replace it after I put the new fridge in...seems the only way to get the fridge in is through the window I'm replacing.

I replaced my sliding windows on our 36C as described here and it worked great. Two additional suggestions - first, if your window won't slide, soak the fuzzys inside and out with a little soapy water (spray bottle worked fine) and after a few minutes it may slide. That did the trick on one of mine, the other took that and the putty knife. Second, get a 4 suction cup handle (haborfreight for less than $10.00) to attach to the window. It is a lot easier to pick up/move that big piece of glass with a handle on the outside of the pane. I did have to jack mine just a tiny bit. Good luck, Bob K
