Hatteras Model
60' CONV -Series I (1978 - 1986)
I have 2 Onan 15 KW generators, Model MDL3 that were installed by PO in our60C in 1992. The fuel transfer pumps on both gensets are leaking fuel. I have replaced screws on flange attaching the pumps, but they still leak. I have tried to find some place that might have replacements for these pumps. I have been cutting up drip pads and putting a pad under the pump housing, but I have to change them out about every 8 hours of running time. These have been fantastic generators except for this one problem. Does anyone know where I can get this part for these 17 yr. old gensets? Thanks, Ross

For parts try ONAN, for new pumps try Depco Pumps in Florida.

Thanks Dennis..Onan doesn't seem to carry parts for older gensets. At least their response is they have discontinued alot of these old parts. I will try depco pumps in Fla. Thanks for the lead. Ross

Ross, Buy an aftermarket electric fuel pump. I recently bought a Carter Universal pump to use as a prime pump. Cap the old guy off and call it a day!Hope this helps.....................Pat

Find out what engine it is Onan used Alis Chalmers in some of the older stuff. Then go to the engine manufacturer for the pump. If not as posted above electric like Walbro (Depco pumps) is a good option.

My MDL4 of the same vintage (1991) uses a Cummins engine (4A2.3), so as Brian suggests, you could try them. Is your engine a 3A1.7 by chance? Or sic marineparts.com on the problem, who helped Jack Sardinia find a water pump cheap for his old Onan. You are talking about the transfer pump, not the fuel injector pump, correct?

Truth be told, I would like to replace mine with an electric; priming after changing the secondary filter is a PITA, compared to doing my Detroits with the Walbros. Anybody have direct experience doing this on these engines?

I have used the above before, also my local Cummings dealer carries most parts. Google the part number, sometimes you can lucky with that. I have the 15KW also.

Thanks you guys..The engine on these gensets is a Cummins 3A1.7. I will try the suggested websites with the thought that if I can't find the fuel transfer pump, I'll try to install and external electric fuel transfer pump. George..you are correct, it is a PITA to prime after replacing the ridiculous box shaped secondary fuel filters. I'll continue my search today..

Go the auto parts store and buy a fuel pump cap off plate. Also buy the cheap small 12vdc electric pump. Close off the old pump hole, install electric pump... Worked very well for me and a really cheap fix...

Ross,

Nice talking with you at your boat last week. We just dealt with this on our new boat. After several hours of trying to source the pump we went with a dc pump tied into the run circuit works perfect. Capped off the old pump made a bracket were the old pump was and attached the new one.

I wish I'd thought of substituting cheap dc pumps when I replaced the transfer pumps on my 20kw Onans.
It $till hurt$.

Ross, Coleman Diesel has proved useful in sourcing Cummins parts.

Once again..Thanks for all the input. I have tried all the sources for a pump and have pretty much struck out. So I have decided on the electric pump externally mounted. Should work good. Another project on the list...
