The short version of the story is that my strbd tank is light about 200 gallons of fuel !!!

The long version is that we topped off the tanks about 5 weeks ago and went trolling for a few hours then put the boat away with the tanks a hair under "F" on both sides. Next, as the conveyor belt of hurricanes lined up on us in Miami, I secured the boat by taking down the canvas, topping off the water tank and moving a lot big cumbersome and heavy supplies and equipment and junk inside the boat. This was 3 plus weeks ago when we hunkered down for possible action from Hannah, Ike and Josephine....thankfully non-events here in Miami.

About 10 days ago someone called to tell me that the boat looked like it had taken on a list of 5 degrees to port. I immediately went thru the whole boat checking all of the compartments for water etc and since I still had all of the coolers and bottled water etc in the salon I just chalked it up to an unbalanced load. Today, I finally have a break and can go fishing this weekend but after securing everything for tomorrows fishing adventure the port list is still there and significant. I went thru the whole boat and could find no reason for the list and last on my checklist was the fuel tanks but I thought to myself that I am wasting those two seconds of my life because the tanks were recently topped off and the boat has sat unused except for rolling it over once a week.

As expected the port tank was just like I left it, a hair under "F" but to my completely unbelieving eyes, my stbd tank fuel needle was sitiing between "E" and 1/4.

WTF !!!!

Upon further inspection, I found that the fuel manifolds (which in my boat are accessible from the Lazarette) were readjusted also. I never manipulate the fuel manifolds and oddly enough I had posed a question to the HOF about transferring fuel but ended up never touching the levers. Now both sides' manifolds were directed to be emptying into the now light strbd tank. Also there is a brand new 4X6 inch scratch to the strbd side of the boat directly adjacent to the fuel fill, (in my marina, there is no boat to my strbd). MFR's !!!!!

I alerted the Miami Beach Marina and the Miami Beach PD and as many of my neighbors on the dock that I could. BTW, my neighbors boat (who has no boat to his port) is listing to strbd. I notified the marina of that also. That's my story. I am now in the market (as so you should be) for a set of metal locking fuel caps....anybody have a connection ?

Miami Beach Marina...always in the news, and it's never good.

Locking fuel caps...I'll be putting that on my to do list. Fortunately, at Rickenbacker, we have video cameras that watch everything and we have access to them too. Ed can sit in his living room in Atlanta and watch our boat here in Miami over the internet. Pretty neat system. I've used it to solve a billing dispute where the worker showed up and worked on another boat for over an hour and charged me for that time. Likewise, when something here gets stolen, we are able to identify the criminals with the cameras. Hopefully, this system will work deter such terrible incidents. Still, I'd like to lock my fuel tanks.

I wonder if the keyhole is a path for water to travel into the tank - don't know. You could also put a gate valve or a seacock inside the boat in the filler hose line - just remember to open it when fueling!

Re: orig post, IMHO appropriate acronymns!!

Vetus just came out with an anti-theft insert for the filler hoses. It's called a Fuel-Safe. Just shove one in each fill and you can't get a hose down it, but fueling is not restricted. Cheap, simple, problem solved. You're welcome. :D

Good find Scrod! I like that a lot more than a key I might lose, break off in the lock, water filling the tumblers causing corrosion or draining in the fuel tank,or especially in my case of often leaving late to go South........ice in the lock and can't get it open!

All those anti-fuel hose thingies popped up during the Arab oil embargo in the early '70s. I'll bet there are a bejillion of them out there sitting in warehouses with owners now tickled to death!

I don't think I'd do the locking cap thing for fear I would lose the key!

I like the Vetus thingy, but I believe Angela's idea is better. If the Vetus thing somehow gets messed up you're in deep stuff, but I can't imagine a problem with a large ball valve at the tank. Matter of fact a "T" just before the valve can be used to drain off any water that may get into the fill port in the event of gasket failure.

Walt,

Another item for the to do list it seems. The T sounds good or the ball valve at least. A friend up the dock lost a tank of gas in his truck this way recently too.

I hope Genesis will weigh in on this one because he had the same year and model as I do,

My 1985 45C does not have access to the fill hoses from the ER that I can see. The problem with the spider is that if you had any problem with it on my boat, you might have to hire a midget with a sawz-all to remedy the problem. I might still be a "key" guy for now.

Had a sportfisher next to me lose a tank about two weeks ago. Reminded me of my younger days when I always got a mouth full of fuel when trying to siphon some out of the tank. Brought about the idea of switching the "waste" deck plate with the "fuel" deck plate....

Ha Ha,

I also thought of the waste tank cap switch-aroo but these guys knew enough to adjust the fuel manifolds so they have a working knowledge of the Hat layout and I don't think they would be fooled.

Has anyone who owns the locking fuel fill caps ever had one rust in the closed position or leak or is that only a theoretical risk ?
Thanks,

Greg

It's pretty bad when someone can actually come alongside your boat for the amount of time required to pump fuel out and not be seen. I have a very low opinion of all thieves but the sneaky ones are the worst. At least a stick up guy has the guts to confront you. Oh well human nature ......

Reminds me of a situation quite a few years ago at the boat yard that I normally haul out at. It was spring fitting out season and my friend and I were working on our boats which happened to be side by side on the hard. Each night we would clean up and put most of our stuff away and remove the ladders and chain them to a jack stand otherwise the ladder would disappear or worse, be used to climb aboard and clean out your tools.

Occasionally we would forget to put something away and sure enough, the next day it would be gone. Being a devious Joisey boy, I figured it's high time to fix whoever it is that has sticky fingers. Since the marina bathrooms were a good distance from out boats, we did what most red blooded Joisey boys would and used empty one gallon pink anti-freeze jugs to pee into. When they were full you take a walk to the mens rm and empty it and rinse it out. Well, I took a Sharpie marking pen and wrote on it "Special Teak Cleaner" use full strength and apply liberally to all surfaces and let set for a while before rinsing. Well, you guessed it the next morning, the jugs were gone and a few other boats got a "Good" teak cleaning.

Damn, I liked doing that......

Walt

I like the way you think Walt.

Your plan was missing one element though. The Special Teak Cleaner needed some type of indelible dye added to it. That way you only need to look around for boats with stained teak to find the culprit. Even if you don't find him, someone will have one heck of a mess to clean up.

In the part of jersey I come from, we’d of taken that same stuff and hosed ‘em off with it:)

Both of your suggestions are excellent but for the time being the punishment did fit the crime.

Trav... I live in Central Jarsey, between exit 8A and 9 (East Brunswick) Where did you live in NJ? Also it boggles my mind why anyone would want to leave our state, after all we have the highest property taxes in the Nation and the best politicians money can buy.

ROFLM Yass O!

Grew up off 7A, then we moved to 10 :)

I lived in Hillside (on the border with Newark) ‘till I was in 7th grade then moved to Waretown, right next to Forked River. Man I loved it there. I used to hang around the marina on Oyster Creek just dying for some old guy to ask me to help him work on his boat. He’d of had the best mate he ever could imagine. I was so fascinated with those boats. Then my ma’ moved me to New Egypt (of all places) off 7A. No boats around there, or beaches. I still haven’t forgiven her for that.

Any of those town names sound familiar?

I worked at Great Adventure, hung around Seaside when I could. I joined the Navy after high school and haven’t been back except to visit. I miss it, I really do.

Where do you keep your boat?

Trav,

I am very familiar with all those areas you mentioned. Matter of fact a good friend of mine ran a small gunsmith business out of New Egypt for some years after he retired from the Army. Of course that was in the 60's. My nephew started out on boats down in Manaloking, near Winters marina (Now Hinkley) by just hanging around the yards. Today he is the Capt of a hundred plus ft Mega Yacht and has even delivered a 146' MY from New Zealand to Malta.

Let me know if you get to NJ. My boat is home ported at the Patten Point Yacht Club in Long Branch NJ on the Shrewsbury river. We have some pretty good watering holes with good food all around us.

Walt

Thanks for the invite :) I will let you know if I ever get back there.
